| Traffic on Sgr-Jmu highway resumes, only stranded vehicles allowed | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Mar 13 : Traffic on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway resumed this morning after remaining suspended for two days due to heavy snowfall and landslides. However, only vehicles, stranded on both sides of the Jawahar tunnel will be allowed to move towards their respective destinations, a traffic police official told. Fresh vehicles will be allowed from Srinagar or Jammu. The highway was closed for traffic movement on March 11 following heavy snowfall at Jawahar tunnel, Shaitain Nallah and Banihal besides landslides at Batrey Cheshma and Penthal, the most troubled spot on the highway. However, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintenance of the highway pressed into service sophisticated machines and men to clear the landslides and snow. With some improvement in the weather condition, vehicles stranded on both sides of the Jawahar tunnel were allowed to move towards their respective destinations this morning, he said. First we allowed stranded vehicles at Qazigund and tunnel area towards Jammu, similarly vehicles on other side of the tunnel were allowed to proceed towards Kashmir", he said Decision to allow vehicles from Srinagar or Jammu tomorrow will be taken only after reviewing the road and weather condition. Only one-way traffic is being allowed on the highway since December to allow free movement of vehicles. However, people alleged that despite one-way daily traffic jam for hours has become a routine. |
