Recent snowfall, rains set new records across JK

Srinagar, Mar13: Based on the data of 24 hours of heavy snowfall and rains that lashed Jammu and Kashmir, Shymetweather.com has provided interesting information in comparison to earlier records. The data is based on the 24 hours of rain and snowfall recorded till 8.30 am on Tuesday.
Srinagar, the summer capital of J&K recorded 58.3 mm of rain. This is the second highest snow and rain recorded in Srinagar since March 16, 2007. Jammu, state's winter capital recorded 38 mm of rain which is the second highest figure for the city in span of 24 hours in last 10 years in the month of March.
Banihal recorded 110.9 mm of snow and rain in a span of 24 hours. This was the second highest precipitation recorded in the last ten years after 124 mm on March 13, 2007.
Health resort and picnic spot Pahalgam recorded the highest ever snow and rain in last 24 hours in March with a whopping figure of 133.4 mm.
Batote, the major town equidistant from Jammu and Srinagar and located on the highway recorded 115. 9 mm of snow and rain which is the highest amount of rain witnessed in a span of 24 hours in the last ten years in March. The amount could beat the historical figure of 138.1 mm recorded on March 6, 1976 as more precipitation is expected Qazigund recorded the second highest rainfall of 84.2 mm in a span of 24 hours in last 10 years during the month of March. The highest precipitation recorded is 124.2, on March 26, 1967. The place had recorded 109.6 mm of snow and rain on March 13, 2007 which is highest in last 10 years.
Pertinently around 600 structures, including dozens of residential houses, have been partially damaged due to the recent heavy snowfall in the Kashmir Valley and as many as 17 people died and 35 injured in avalanches that hit hilly areas of Kulgam, Shopian and other districts.
