| Crores of rupees go down the drain as Srinagar city gets submerged after snow melts | | | Jehangir Rashid SRINAGAR, Mar 13: Crores of rupees have gone down the drain as the faulty drainage system has added to the miseries of the common masses following the recent heavy snowfall that was recorded in the summer capital of the state along with the other parts of the Kashmir valley. Scores of areas in the Srinagar city are submerged following the melting of the snow. Pedestrians as well as the drivers of different vehicles are up against many odds these days since they have to travel through the submerged roads. The inundation of the areas has led to a situation where the people reach their respective destinations after a long time. Over the past three days areas like Magharmal Bagh, Sarie Bala, Jehangir Chowk, Exhibition Crossing, Hari Singh High Street, Jawahar Nagar, Mehjoor Nagar, Natipora, Nowgam, Bemina, Qamarwari Peer Bagh, Hyderpora, Sanat Nagar and Eidgah are inundated. The inundation of these areas has led to the problems living in these areas and also to those who pass by these areas on frequent basis. The people who run their business in the commercially important areas of Magharmal Bagh, Sarie Bala, Jehangir Chowk, Exhibition Crossing, Hari Singh High Street and Jawahar Nagar are all upset since the water has seeped into their commercial establishments. These people took potshots at the state government saying that people at helm have failed to set right the defective drainage system. Although, the normal life was somewhat restored in Srinagar today many of the shopkeepers in the commercial areas could not resume their activities. The shopkeepers complained of huge loss due to the fact that the water has destroyed their goods considerably. These people also mocked at the claims made by Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) that more than 70 pumps have been pressed into service to dewater the inundated areas. "The state government has been claiming that a great amount has been spent on the drainage system in the Srinagar city under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JnNURM) programme. If the amount has been spent then where are the drains and the proper drainage system," questioned a group of residents while sharing their view with Early Times. |
