| India deploys 3 ships to search Malaysia Airlines jet | | | Agencies
New Delhi, Mar 13: India today joined the multi-nation search operation for the missing Malaysia Airlines plane by deploying three ships and as many aircraft in the seas east of the Anadaman & Nicobar islands, the base of its tri-services command. “India has formally joined the search operations this afternoon for the missing Malaysian airliner by sending three ships,” confirmed Defence Ministry officials. Two Dornier planes and one newly acquired P-8I aircraft, both specialised in conducting reconnaissance for long periods over the oceans will assist the Malaysian Navy, the lead organisation for the search operation. The decision to deploy naval assets came after Defence Minister A. K. Antony’s nod to conduct search for the missing plane in an area east of the islands in the Andaman Sea, close to Myanmar and Malaysia, said the officials. Malaysia requested India to join the search on Tuesday after planes and ships from at least 10 countries were unable to locate the civilian aircraft in the seas to the west of the Malacca Straits. At present search operations are being conducted over an area of 90,000 square kms. The officials said the three naval ships – INS Saryu, INS Kumbhir and ICG Kanaklata Barua – would have reached the search area by now. |
