| Govt forgets Uri villages | | | Syed Tahir Bukhari BARAMULLA, Mar 21: Residents of around 10 far flung villages of Uri in this North Kashmir district are trapped in their houses since the last one week or so after landslides hit them thus blocking the roads leading to these villages. Nobody from the civil administration has come to the rescue of the villagers despite the fact that they are living on the border line along the Line of Control (LoC). The occurrence of landslides has endangered the lives of the inhabitants and they are living under a constant threat to their lives and property. A group of villagers told Early Times in the past whenever they needed help the same would come from the army adding that this time around the security forces too have ditched them. They said that none among the district administration bothered to visit at this hour of distress and discomfort. "We are exclusively dependent on army but today when we are in danger army also did not bother to reach us," said Mohammad Sultan Khatana resident of Uroosa-Isham. Khatana had to travel 19 kilometers extra to reach Uri, from the locked village which is otherwise only 12 KMs away from the Uri town. "I had to travel for almost a day to reach Uri as all the entry and exit points are closed," said Sultan. The village had a traditional route to reach to Uri crossing Khar Mohalla Nallah but a temporary bridge on the Nallah also was drowned. When asked about the trapped people Sultan said, "The condition of old aged people and the children is miserable during winter times." It would be in place to mention here that Kashmir valley witnessed a heavy snowfall last week resulting in many deaths and injuries to the people from hilly areas and plains too. A natural calamity has not only put the people on high alert but people living in various other areas were compelled to shift in the safer areas. Authorities in this district of North Kashmir have evacuated almost 20 families to safer places like government quarters and schools buildings due to landslides in the area.
