| Indispensable' Azad to counter 'NaMo' mania | | Will he, won't he ? | |
Kunal Shrivatsa Jammu, Mar 21: By preferring Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad over others including the sitting MP, Choudhary Lal Singh for contesting the crucial Udhampur-Doda parliamentary constituency, the Congress High Command's decision has once again indicated that it relies heavily on the mass appeal of its senior leader from this part of the country to counter the challenge posed by BJP Prime Ministerial nominee Narendra Modi. After giving a long thought over the nomination of Azad for Udhampur-Doda Lok Sabha seat, the Congress High Command finally gave nod to his candidature which itself reflects that the party has virtually conceded that Azad is indispensable at the hustings in the state particularly in Jammu and Ladakh regions. Already burdened with key assignments within the Congress, the veteran Congress leader, now, has been asked to be the torch bearer of the party in J&K. The importance of being 'Azad' in the Congress could be gauged from the fact that the party High Command has bestowed him with the important responsibility to look after the campaign of party across the country since he is one of the members in the 50-member strong Campaign Committee for the 2014 Lok Sabha polls. While campaigning for party's Jammu-Poonch Lok Sabha candidate Madan Lal Sharma in Nowshera, Rajouri on March 14, Azad himself admitted that he has been entrusted the job to look after party's campaign in nearly 150 Lok Sabha seats. Azad had said, "Several Legislators, Ministers and even others in the party asked me to contest Lok Sabha election but I am not interested because the party high command has assigned me the great responsibility of nearly 150 Lok Sabha seats for campaign. Under such circumstances, I would not be able to justify and spare sufficient time for contesting Lok Sabha election. However, the party decision would be supreme." Now, that Azad has been given the mandate for Udhampur-Doda parliamentary constituency by the party High Command, it is clearly evident that Congress needs the services of Azad not only on the national political arena but also in his home state where his presence could prove vital in the final outcome of the Lok Sabha poll process. However, under the present political scenario which is completely over shadowed by 'NaMo' wave across the nation, the task at hand for Azad is not only challenging but tough. It remains to be seen that how well Azad can use his resources viz-a-viz his vast political acumen to sail the party through the troubled waters particularly in Jammu region where BJP has a strong foothold. |
