Jammu, Mar 21: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is now on course correction mode to cement relations with the Congress, after antagonizing the hurting the latter with statements and actions.
Omar who had first ignored Azad on a campaign tour to Pooch and Rajouri districts, suddenly shifted gears. He first tweeted about his concern about Congress not announcing its candidate so that both the parties can go in election mode and help each other.
Then he personally accompanied Cong candidate Madan Lal Sharma on filing papers. Omar used the opportunity to announce that NC and Cong will win all the six seats, sending a message that he is close to his coalition partner.
Then the last of his actions came when he welcomed the announcement of Azad's candidature. He termed it as an excellent decision.
Omar, who had locked horns with the Congress first over Armed Forces Special Powers Act and then over the 73rd Amendment, has been going hot and cold over relations with the Congress. He first personally ensured that Cong should not get any seat in the Kashmir valley and then also explored a possibility of an alliance with the BJP an open ended equation, much to the discomfort of the Congress, then suddenly started moving close to it.
Political observers says that Omar is going soft with the Cong, for his own political career. But at the same time he is not closing chapter with the BJP all together.
The Chief Minister is also in knowledge of the fact that Azad's candidature may not completely set him away from the state politics. He knows that in post Assembly elections scenario the possibility of Azad coming back to State if the Cong is in advantage position can't be ruled out.
He had himself said that Azad along with Mufti and Farooq were the only front runners for the CM post and he was only an outsider.
He knows that either Azad can block his chances of coming to power again or can atleast have him the chair on rotational basis if he (Omar ) uses his personal equation with Cong point person to keep alliance going even in Assembly elections. |
