Taking the lead in releasing this document in the country and breaking away from the conventional way of releasing a public document by celebrities, the Red Cross chose to release the Charter by a common citizen. IRCS is a Citizen Centric organization working in the state of Jammu & Kashmir since 1948, delivering humanitarian assistance in the most difficult terrains of the state in collaboration with the individual volunteers, national and international organisations. Upholding the seven fundamental principles of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, the J&K State Branch of IRCS works under the Presidentship of N N Vohra, Governor of the state. The organization strives to provide assistance to those affected by manmade or natural disasters without any discrimination through two Regional and 22 District Red Cross Committees having deep reach in every corner of the state. The release of the Citizens' Charter is part of the initiatives being taken to bring greater transparency in the functioning of the Red Cross and enhance peoples' participation in its activities. While releasing the Charter, Roma Wani, General Secretary, IRCS-J&K, highlighted the initiatives and programmes of Red Cross. She said "The excellent cooperation of civil society and organizations throughout the J&K State has enabled us to develop a strategy and fund which can genuinely meet the needs of local requirements which contribute to humanitarian assistance and these new initiatives make a considerable contribution to delivering aid and support to citizens living in poverty and social exclusion". |
