| Lal Singh likely to be rehabilitated as Member Rajya Sabha | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Mar 21: Though the PCC Chief,Saif-ud-Din Soz,is said to have opposed the initial plan of the Congress to field Lal Singh from Udhampur-Doda Lok Sabha constituency, the Party high command may rehabilitate Singh by sending him to the Rajya Sabha in case Ghulam Nabi Azad won the seat. Party sources said that Azad too has been supporting Lal Singh's rehabilitation by sending him to the Rajya Sabha whenever a seat fell vacant in the upper House. This is the result of Azad's eagerness to secure support from Lal Singh who has pockets of influence in the constituency. According to these sources,Soz opposed Lal Singh on two grounds. Lal Singh had remained a passive spectator of communal trouble that rocked Kishtwar area last year. As MP from the area Lal Singh should have spent days and weeks in the troubled area for bringing about reconciliation between the two communities. Lal Singh's failure to do so had generated anger among people in the entire Kishtwar-Doda belt. Hence Soz did not want the Congress to lose the seat to the BJP or any other party. Secondly, by supporting Azad's candidature Soz wanted to mend fences with Azad so that the Congress victory from Jammu, Udhampur and Ladakh constituencies could prove a feather in the cap of the PCC chief. However, party sources said that Lal Singh cannot be ignored as he had successfully contested the Udhampur seat twice since 2004.They said that the Congress needs Lal Singh because of the Assembly election that is to be held later in the current year. |
