Why is NC targetting PDP, BJP?
Fear of free and fair elections
3/22/2014 11:22:15 PM
Early Times Report
Jammu, Mar 22: The issueless and failed National Conference (NC) leadership has unleashed a no-holds-barred propaganda against the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress have been trying their best to convert the coming elections into a war between fake secularism for which they stand and communalism (read people's democracy, national integration, fight against corruption, development and economic prosperity). The NC leadership has been attacking the PDP all the more saying that the main opposition PDP has "covert ties" with the BJP. To make its point, it has been saying that PDP leader Muzaffar Hussain Beig's adulatory and reverential comments on BJP's Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi while speaking to a TV channel recently were consistent with his party's covert ties with the BJP. It has also been referring to what the patron of PDP Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and party president Mehbooba Mufti have been saying about the BJP-led NDA. Both the PDP leaders have been commending the performance of the BJP-led NDA Government and criticizing the Congress-led UPA Government. "Such shyly laudatory comments about Modi have come from Mehbooba Mufti as well in the recent past," it has been saying, and underlining the need to ensure that the PDP is "defeated in its plans to trivialize the sentiments of the people".
As for the BJP Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, the NC leadership has been terming him communal and divisive. Modi is a polarizing and divisive figure, it has been saying, notwithstanding the fact that both the NC and the Congress are fake secular outfits. One can understand the reasons behind the NC's blistering attacks on the PDP. After all, the PDP is its arch political foe in the Kashmir valley. But why is the NC leadership opposing the alleged understanding between the PDP leadership and the BJP leadership? The PDP is an independent organization and it has, like the NC or any other political party, the right to associate itself directly or indirectly with any political party. The NC cannot have double-standards in this regard. If the NC could flirt with the Congress and the vice-versa, why can't the PDP work with the BJP-led NDA? This is not a difficult political question. It has an easy answer. The answer is that the NC is mortally afraid of the BJP. It believes, and rightly so, that the formation of the BJP-led NDA Government at the centre in May would mar its electoral prospects. Its fear is well-founded. The formation of BJP-led NDA Government under Narendra Modi would mean free and fair assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir as it happened in 2002 during the regime of Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
The manner in which the 2002 Assembly elections were held in Jammu and Kashmir was appreciated not only by the people of the state but also by the international community. It was indeed a free and fair exercise. The people of the state rejected the NC. Its tally was reduced from 57 to 28 - a huge loss of 29 seats. The just-formed PDP won 18 seats and surprised everyone in the state and elsewhere. The PDP in collaboration with the Congress dislodged the NC Government and ever since then, the NC is finding it difficult to restore the political ground it lost then to the PDP in Kashmir. The NC leadership knows that the upcoming assembly elections would prove a waterloo for it and, hence, its attack both on the PDP and the BJP. Its attack on the BJP and the PDP could be construed as a manifestation of its frustration.
