| LC acid test for Cong few days away, Subhash retiring on April 1 | | | Syed Junaid Hashmi Jammu, Mar 22: Jammu and Kashmir Congress is set to face acid test of choosing a member for being nominated to the Legislative Council. Subhash Chander Gupta, who was nominated from the Congress quota, is retiring on April 1, 2014. Much before the retirement of Gupta on April 1, sources said that Congress leaders have already started making efforts for getting nominated. They added that since it is nomination and there would not be any voting, Congress has to take a decision of whom they want to field. Member Parliament (MP) Choudhary Lal Singh who created a storm in New Delhi by seeking proper re-adjustment in return for vacating Doda-Udhampur Lok Sabha seat for ex-Chief Minister and Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Ghulam Nabi Azad whom Congress has now fielded from his home constituency. Singh had threatened to contest as independent if not rehabilitated properly. Congress has assured Choudhary Lal Singh that he would be considered for an important position as and when the same becomes available, said the sources. They asserted that Lal Singh is expecting to be nominated for the Legislative Council where a vacancy would be created on April 1. Sources further said that he is even expecting to be bestowed with Health Ministry after the Model Code of Conduct gets over. However, sources in the Law Ministry said that the vacancy is to be filled from people of eminent background especially ones from the special work side or intellectuals, academicians and literary figures. They added that in no case, constitution would be allowed to be violated for accommodating a political person. Sources further said that names of R.S. Chib, Suman Lata Bhagat, Mula Ram are also doing rounds. There is little or no scope of Congress repeating Subhash Gupta, said a source. He maintained that a new face is certain. Though Subhash Gupta is considered close to Ghulam Nabi Azad but situation created by Lal Singh is unlikely to allow Azad to even consider repeating him. |
