Omar's take on low voter turnout reflects he is shirking responsibility as CM

JAMMU, Apr 27: With Omar Abdullah openly refusing to be 'accountable' for the low turnout in Anantnag Lok Sabha seat, the Chief Minister in a way has tried to devalue the importance of leaders, who in a vibrant democracy like India, play a major role in persuading the electors to cast votes.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah while addressing a press conference at Srinagar yesterday had said that he was not accountable to people who do not cast votes.
"I am accountable only to people who vote," he said adding that the only way you can get accountability is when you cast votes.
By saying that he was not accountable to people boycotting polls, Omar Abdullah is only trying to shrug off the responsibility of a leader, who acts as a beacon light of hope to the masses and whose primary responsibility is to inspire people to be participative in poll process.
It is not only the ruling National Conference or its leaders who are to be blamed for the low turnout in Anantnag parliamentary constituency, all other mainstream political parties active in Kashmir region have failed to inspire the electorate to cast votes.
Though Election Commission of India (ECI) and Union Government's publicity wings always make best possible efforts in prompting the voters to use the power of ballot in every election, the politicians, who have direct connection with the people, cannot deny their role in influencing the masses.
"The role of politicians is equally important in making people aware about the importance of the vote…The onus of impressing upon the electors to come out of their houses to cast votes certainly lies with the politicians… If politicians can ask and prevail upon the people in making a shut down call successful or for that matter any other form of protest then why can't they succeed in ensuring people's participation in poll process," said National Panthers Students Union leader Partap Singh Jamwal.
"If a leader is not able to motivate the electors to exercise their right to franchise then who else will convince them to know the importance of the vote… As many as 72 percent people in Anantnag parliamentary constituency did not vote on April 24 which reflects the inefficiency of the state's politicians in convincing the electors to cast votes," he added.
