NC shares on facebook Geelani calling Mufti staunch Indian?
New found love

JAMMU, Apr 27: Politics makes strange bed-fellows! In this polarised poll season, National Conference seems to have found a friend in Hurriyat and that too, none other than the hardliner and pro-Pakistan Syed Ali Shah Geelani.
The new found love for Syed Ali Shah Geelani is because of him having called PDP Patron Mufti Mohammed Sayeed a 'Staunch Indian'. By sharing this statement of hardliner and Pro-Pakistan Syed Ali Shah Geelani on facebook, NC has confirmed that it is neither Farooq Abdullah nor their Chief Minister Omar Abdullah whom the Kashmir trusts but only Syed Ali Shah Geelani.
Overnight, the man who until yesterday was the most hated figure of NC has become their first love. Syed Basheer Veeri, the innovative and hyperactive MLC of National Conference from Bijbehara was the first to update on his social networking page the statement of Syed Ali Shah Geelani. His status was shared by young and upcoming NC leader from Banihal Sajjad Shaheen.
Observers, especially who have an understanding of how the NC operates do not hesitate in saying that the two seemed to convey those on the facebook about Mufti being a staunch Indian and hence, should not be encouraged in Kashmir. "If this is not the reason, then why would an NC walla bother about certificate of Indian nationality being issued by Syed Ali Shah Geelani," said a political observer.
There can be no other reason than to tell people in Srinagar especially those who are on facebook that since now Geelani has certified that Mufti is staunch Indian, his party should not be voted in the upcoming polls, maintained another political analyst. He added that elsewhere in India especially in the New Delhi circles; Geelani has made Mufti the darling of all by calling him staunch Indian.
However, the two NC leaders have tried to polarise votes by referring to Geelani's statement. "Geelani's statement is no religious sermon which these two NC leaders have shared on the facebook. If they want to tell Srinagar people that since Mufti is staunch Indian, do not vote for him. Then, they have to be asked, which nation they belong to. This shows their mental state," said a senior politician.
He expressed disgust at this behaviour of NC leaders. The links to the two statuses of these leaders are https://www.facebook.com/drVeeri?hc_location=timeline andhttps://www.facebook.com/sajjadshaheenbnl?fref=ts. The two can be assessed easily provided the two leaders do not delete these two updates. The difference is only that one has updated the KNS news story and other one of a newspaper.
Early Times has kept record of both the statuses. This certification and and that too at a time, when National Conference (NC) is facing toughest battle of its electoral history in Kashmir valley. Anantnag has voted on April 24 and if the ground reports are to be relied upon, news is not good for the NC-Congress coalition. Even in their bastions, reports are that anti-incumbency has pushed them to the wall.
Though the party has already celebrated low voter turnout over twitter and facebook as a sign of its victory, ground reports indicate that Congress miserably failed to convince its loyalists and workers to vote for NC while PDP has effectively managed to get the voters out and votes casted. Whose script is based on facts would be known only on May 16 but now the focus is on Srinagar which is essentially the epicentre of separatist politics and also a stronghold of NC.
NC has always managed to hold sway in Srinagar district. The seat has remained for most part of the Lok Sabha elections with National Conference (NC). However, this time around, NC and PDP are locked in neck to neck battle. It is now to be seen how the NC responds to this new found love.
