Blasts took place before, during NC election rallies | Twin blasts injure 19 persons at Magam, Khanyar | | Jehangir Rashid SRINAGAR, Apr 27: The penultimate day of campaigning for the Srinagar-Budgam Lok Sabha seat saw two explosions with at least 19 persons suffering injuries in the blasts that took place within a span of one hour in Budgam and Srinagar districts. The explosions took place before and during the separate election rallies addressed by National Conference President, Dr. Farooq Abdullah at Magam and Khanyar respectively. Dr. Abdullah who is the National Conference-Congress coalition candidate for Srinagar-Budgam Lok Sabha seat addressed both the rallies under tremendous security cover. This morning at about 11:30 AM suspected militants hurled a grenade near the Magam bus stand. There was a loud bang after the hurling of the grenade and people ran hither-thither to ensure their safety. The market that was bustling with activity came to a grinding halt with people running away and the shopkeepers leaving their shops while managing their escape. Reports said that at least 17 persons suffered injuries in the blast and they were shifted to various hospitals for treatment. The injured persons were taken to Sub District Hospital, Magam where three among them were discharged after given first aid. The other 14 injured persons were referred to JVC Bemina for specialized treatment. Hospital sources said that one of the injured identified as Nazir Ahmad Mir of Ratsuna has serious eye injury while two others Haleema Bano of Khag and Mugli Begum have lower abdominal injuries. The other injured persons were identified as Ruhullah, Nazir Ahmad Mir and Parvez Ahmad of Magam, Shahid Nazir of Makhama, Nadeem Shah of Baramulla, Ghulam Hassan Rahi of Kunzer Tangmarg, Abdul Majeed Dar and Mohammad Maqbool of Pattan, Abdul Rashid Hajam, Ghulam Rasool Hajam and Mohammad Lateef Khan of Khag, Ghulam Mohammad Rather of Dangerpora, Mushtaq Ahmad Waza of Tarhama and Bashir Ahmad Dar of Narbal. Some three hours later Dr. Abdullah addressed the election rally in the Magam town but under intense security arrangements being put in place. A police spokesman in a press release said that this forenoon an explosion was reported from Sumo stand in Magam in Budgam district. The explosion occurred under a Tavera vehicle parked in sumo stand. It caused a very small impact on the road and damage to its left front wheel. "As a result of some splinters from the vehicle minor injuries were caused to three persons namely Nazir Ahmad Shah son of Ataullah Shah resident of Sheikhwara-Bala, Nazir Ahmad Mir son of Abdul Rahim resident of Ratsunna, Beerwah and Mugli Begum wife of Abdul Ahad resident of Kanihama. The injured have been provided medical help. Police has taken cognizance of the matter and started investigation into the nature of the explosion," said the police spokesman. An hour earlier an explosion was reported from the Khanyar area of downtown Srinagar. The explosion took place as NC President was addressing an election rally. The explosion caused some disturbance in the rally with people running towards safer places. Unconfirmed reports said that two persons suffered minor injuries but the same was refuted by police. The police spokesman while giving details about the incident said that this forenoon sound of an explosion was heard in Khanyar, Srinagar. There were no reports of any injury to anyone. Police has started investigation into the matter as to what caused the sound of the explosion. A political rally held in the area concluded normally, said the spokesman. |
