JAMMU, Apr 27: Traffic on National Highway at Samba remains suspended for hours after angry mob set a truck carrying bovine animals on fire here on Sunday. However, police managed to rescue four bovine smugglers from the clutches of the mob and booked them under relevant sections. The incident took place under the jurisdiction of Gagwal Police Station and that too without any prior planning. The people were staging Dharna on National Highway at Londimorh against PHE department for its failure to provide water to them. Reports said that while people were being pacified by the executive engineer of the area, a truck bearing registration number JK02L/1611 carrying bovine animals was spotted by the protestors. This allegedly fuel to the fire in turn and angry mob set the truck on fire. The police party which escorted the protestors, acting swiftly, rescued the four persons sitting in the truck from the clutches of the angry mob. They were later taken into custody. Later, police also intercepted another truck carrying bovine animals. Around 15 animals were rescued from both the trucks. SSP Samba Anil Mangotra when contacted said that during questioning, the arrested bovine smugglers told police that they collected the animals from Hatli area in Kathua district and were on way to Srinagar. He further said that as compared to last year in which 40 cases were registered, Samba police till April of this year have foiled about 30 bovine smuggling bids, besides slapped PSA against two notorious bovine smugglers. Meanwhile, Doda police during a naka checking, at Thathri held one bovine smuggler namely Riaz Ahmed, a resident of Thubba, Premnagar and rescued 04 bovine animals. Accused was arrested and a case FIR No. 27/2014 u/s 188 RPC registered in Police Station Thathri. |
