| Awami Aawaz for transparency, accountability in J&K | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, May 12: Hundreds of people participated for favoring a civil society initiative under the theme of 'Implementation of Transparency & Accountability' in the system of Jammu and Kashmir State which was organized by Awami Aawaz at Sher-i-Kashmir Park here. In a statement, a spokesman of Awami Aawaz said the demonstration programme was attended by large number of students from different colleges and schools of the valley besides group of students from Ladakh. Doctors, intellectuals, scholars, professionals and religious scholars from across the valley shared their views and solutions for eradication off social evils like corruption and drug abuse from society. Welcoming the participants at the event, a renowned educationist, Ghulam Mohammad Dar, focused mainly on the types of corruption and drug abuse which has targeted mostly youth of the society. "The institutional corruption is all alone responsible for most of the mess what we are experiencing in our system at all levels," he said. Dar said that more than 70,000 youth are involved in drug addiction adding that the issue needs to be taken up at the earliest. He said people should chip in and do their bit in eradicating this social evil from the society. Dr. Mohammad Ashraf in his speech said, "Our youth are being deprived by the authorities which is also a type of corruption. Students for different state level examinations are no more being selected on the basis of merit but on the basis of money they can make bid for enrolment in professional courses." A renowned religious scholar, Moulana Showkat Ali said that World Bank offers so many funds to the society for the welfare of society but the government officials don't provide such funds for the welfare of common people. Female student leader Bazila Manzoor asked the people to start the reforms from their homes and extend the same to society. She said that people should first stop drug addiction from their home so that the message has a far-reaching result. She added that drug addicts are not criminals but they are patients and need to be rehabilitated. |
