| Landslide blocks Srinagar- Muzaffarabad highway | | | Syed Tahir Bukhari BARAMULLA, May 12: The Srinagar Muzaffarabad road was closed due to continuous rainfall which caused landslide and caused at several places. Hundreds of vehicles were stranded on the highway as Border Roads Organization is yet to clear the road since Monday morning in North Kashmir's Baramulla district. The Srinagar-Muzaffarabad road was briefly blocked on Monday following a landslide triggered by incessant rains in north Kashmir's Baramulla district. According to police , "A massive landslide hit the road near NS Bridge in Baramulla, 101 kms from Srinagar, blocking traffic. He said police immediately swung into action to clear the road which connects Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) with Srinagar. The personnel of Border Roads Organisation (BRO), which maintains the vital roads in the state, joined the rescue work in the afternoon of Monday and the road was cleared for light vehicles, the spokesman said. According to sources, "the landslides and stone shooting continued at many places on Srinagar-Muzaffarabad road. "Around four hundred vehicles were allowed to move from both the sides after the debris and mud was cleared at many places till the last reports came in. The Srinagar-Muzaffarabad road had been blocked several times in the past due to massive landslides which also prompted the authorities to shift dozens of families living close to the Line of Control (LOC) to safer places. Meanwhile fresh rain has also triggered panic in Sultanpora Kandi of Baramulla town where landslide has made their lives hell, due to which they feel insecurity. According to Nazir Ahmad local resident of Sultanpora, "residents of around 5 far flung villages of Sultanpora Kandi area of district Baramulla are trapped in their houses since Monday morning after landslides hit them thus blocking the roads leading to these villages. He said, "From Sunday evening continuous rain has lashed the whole north Kashmir, due to which land sliding and shooting stones were seen at many places in Baramulla district, which halted a traffic moment throughout the day. "Despite the fact that they are living in the far flung areas of district Baramulla. The occurrence of landslides has endangered the lives of the inhabitants and they are living under a constant threat to their lives and property said Mir. It is pertinent to mention here that Kashmir valley has witnessed a heavy rainfall since Sunday Evening in the hilly areas and plains too. A natural calamity has not only put the people on high alert but people living in various other areas were compelled to shift in the safer areas. |
