BARAMULLA, June 7: People protesting the negligence of R&B and Flood Control departments, blocked Gulmarg road near Government Degree College Chandilora, in North Kashmir's Baramulla district today. Paddy fields in Tangmarag villages are facing shortage of irrigation water. Expressing concerns, farmers said that growth of paddy crops could be affected due to shortage of water in major streams. According to sources that, "People were protesting because the water stream which is flowing from Tangmarag to Reran village is completely damaged and water was flowing on the roads. Due to which everyone be it a local or tourists were having many problems particularly school going children. "The shortage of water will badly affect the growth of paddy crop in the coming few weeks. The PHE department is doing nothing to save the water which is very important for the growth of paddy saplings, said Ghulam Qadir, a farmer from Chandilora. Farmers are protesting against the negligence of Roads and Building (R&B) and Flood Control Departments. The protesters were demanding for repairing of these water streams and roads which connects Tangmarag with rest of the state. Another farmer alleged that from last two weeks water streams are reducing and the Flood and Irrigation department has not de-weeded the canals and streams leading to the decline of water level. Thousands of kanals of paddy fields are depend on these canals for irrigation water in the area. "As the temperature is increasing day by day and the water level in streams is receding with each passing day. Cleaning of these water-bodies is necessary to increase the flow of water and ensure adequate supply of irrigation water to the fields," said Mohd Ashraf of Gogaldara. Farmers of the area are worst hit due to the damage of water streams as the water doesn't reach to the paddy fields in time People in general said that water is flowing on roads from last four days but none of the employees from both the departments visited to the place for repairing and maintenance of these roads cum streams. However Station House Officer Tangmarag Syed Aiyaz Geelani reached on the spot and assured the people that he will take up the matter with the concerned departments, and requested the people to allow the traffic. Meanwhile temperatures continue to soar in the plains, the salubrious weather in the Kashmir Valley has been attracting tourists in large numbers. Hundreds of tourists are thronging the hill stations of Gulmarg as they are finding the weather there soothing and pleasant. "Days temperature is increasing all over the state and at the same time Gulmarg was cool at 8.2 degrees Celsius during the night. |
