Struggling for restoration of the lost political space
Farooq Abdullah's Amnesty card
6/8/2014 12:20:22 AM

Neha
Jammu, June 7: The National Conference (NC), which suffered a massive defeat at the hands of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) in Kashmir in the just-concluded Lok Sabha election, is trying its level best to restore the lost political space. During the past few days, it has taken a couple of steps in this direction, including increase in the retirement age and withdrawal of the irrational and roundly condemned recruitment of policy. Besides, it has sought to give an emotional touch to its moves to hoodwink and mislead the people of Kashmir. So desperate has the NC leadership turned that its president and former Union Minister Farooq Abdullah, who was trounced by the PDP candidate, even vouched for general amnesty for those who had been behind bars since 2010.
Interacting with reporters on May 29 at the party headquarters, Nawa-e-Subah, Srinagar, he said he wanted the state Government to grant general amnesty to the youth involved in stone-pelting incidents, as some of the youth he met asked him to intervene and do something for them. "I met (Kashmiri) youth who were involved in stone-pelting. They told me there are FIRs against them which should be withdrawn. They need to be given some sort of general amnesty. Youth are our backbone. They are the future of Kashmir. They said their life has become hell and I want them to live a happy life," he said after addressing the NC youth wing.
It is pertinent to mention here that between June and August 2010, the Pakistan-supported brigade of urban guerilla warriors had virtually brought off a coup against and bled the Indian nation. These destabilising enemies of India, who were also backed to the hilt by the Kashmiri extremists and pro-Pakistan elements, attacked almost all the symbols of the Indian State and targetted the Indian security forces. In the process, hundreds of our disciplined security forces personnel, who were involved in anti-insurgency operations, suffered at the hands of the stone-pelting guerilla warriors. The stones they used were not ordinary stokes; those were sharp edged deadly boulders/weapons. A number of security forces personnel, who had suffered fatal injuries, lost their precious lives for the cause of the nation.
During the security forces personnel and enemies of India clashes, around 110 guerilla warriors also lost their lives. The security forces retaliated and swung into action only after the situation went out of control. Had our security forces not acted on time, the story of Kashmir today would have been somewhat different. The nation is grateful to the Army and the paramilitary forces, including the CRPF, who braved all odds and saved Kashmir for India after making supreme sacrifices.
During this period, the law and order authorities had also booked and put behind bars more than 1,300 youth in the Valley. They are facing charges of rioting and stone-pelting since 2010. It all happened after the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) under the former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh adopted a resolution holding Omar Abdullah responsible for what it called the "trust-deficit" and "governance-deficit" in Kashmir and directed him to discharge his duties as Chief Minister. This was perhaps the first occasion when the CCS censured any Chief Minister in writing. Remember, that was the time when Omar Abdullah was camping in Delhi to persuade the Congress high command and the South and North Blocks to revoke the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) that provides legal immunity to the forces involved in anti-insurgency operations. How shameful and irresponsible was his behaviour! He would have been dismissed from office had Rahul Gandhi, his friend, not intervened. Rahul Gandhi asked the Union Government to "give Omar Abdullah sometime". It was his message from Kolkata that saved Omar Abdullah's chair.
It is disturbing that Farooq Abdullah spoke for and on behalf of the destabilising enemies of India. It is hoped that the Union Government would take cognizance of what the disgruntled NC leaders are doing to complicate matters in the Kashmir valley. India is not a banana republic.
