| Omar's announcement about increase in retirement age doubted by masses in general | | | Jehangir Rashid SRINAGAR, June 7: Omar Abdullah led coalition government's knee jerk reaction after the debacle in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections has not gone well with the people with masses saying that steps taken recently could have taken much earlier. In the last week the state government announced the increase in retirement age of the employees from 58 to 60 years. Ever since Omar took over as the chief minister of the state the state government employees were on a warpath with the state government. They were up in arms with respect to their demands and wanted the government to act fast. "For the last five and half years the coalition government did not take any decision with respect to the enhancement of retirement age of the employees. It was all due to the crushing defeat the coalition suffered during the Lok Sabha elections that the state government was forced to take this important administrative decision," said Mohammad Maqbool, a government employee. Parallel factions of Employees Joint Action Committee carried out series of protests and strikes in support of their demands. Employee leaders were arrested by police not once but on many occasions while they were raising revolt against the state government. "Financial crunch was put forward as the basic reason for the non-fulfillment of demand of increase of retirement age of the employees by the state government. How come this has been overcome given the fact that the chief minister or any of his ministers carried a magical wand in their hand," said Abdul Rehman, a retired government official. There are people who say that the present coalition dispensation wants to put a burden on the new state government by increasing the retirement age of the employees. They say that Omar led government wants that the new dispensation is buried under the rubble of the financial impact. "It will require huge financial resources for the state government to manage the affairs following increase in the retirement age of the employees. The fact remains that government employees have won their hard earned battle against the state government. It remains to be seen how the new government deals with the likely financial burden," said Nazir Ahmad, an employee. Youth who have been appointed under the new job policy are also perplexed as they are somewhat uncertain about their future. They say that government should make it clear what would be their future since the new job policy has been revoked by the state government. "It is a good thing that the new job policy has been revoked but the wider details are not yet know. It is important that retrospective effect is given to the revocation of job policy so that the people appointed under the policy get benefitted. If it is not done then it would be injustice with these people," said Aijaz Ahmad, a youth. |
