| How many golf players of repute has JK produced? | | Most awards for Teakwondo reflects other sports are neglected | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, June 19: The Sher-e-Kashmir sports award ceremony proves that the state has been neglecting major games. Most of the awards were given for Teakwondo. The National Conference led governments have vandalized the environment by making golf courses at every place. The state has not produced a gold player of repute till date. On the contrary, the golf courses have become pleasure houses for ministers, politicians, babus, newspaper owners and businessmen. The maximum damage to the world famous Dal Lake was done by Dr Farooq Abdullah by vandalizing the city forest to make the Royal Springs Golf Course. According to experts, the city forest formed the most important catchment of the lake. If the lake is to survive the golf course has to be vandalized, they opine. "Once this is done, the forest will re-grow on its own in two years," they said. Football has been the most popular game of the state since but the government instead of popularizing it has turned playgrounds into parks which breed promiscuity and waywardness. When there were enough grounds, the state produced footballers of international repute. Some of them led India in international tournaments and won laurels for the state. Omar while addressing the ceremony said stadia with all facilities will come up in Srinagar and Jammu. The only stadium in Jammu is being use by people to learn driving much to the discomfort of the sportsmen. How many swimming pools are available to the swimmers of the state? How many scholarships have been given to promote sports? Giving awards is good but best thing would be to give facilities to the sportsmen. Early Times congratulates all the sportspersons who were awarded in today's function and wishes them good luck in their future pursuits but unless the government gives up its obsession for golf courses, things won't change. |
