| Party leaders, workers in fix over multiple issues | | | Jehangir Rashid SRINAGAR, June 22: Days after the announcement of candidates by Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for assembly elections the Congress party is all ready to set the ball rolling for the announcement of the party candidates for these elections. Top brass of Congress party is meeting in the summer capital of the state tomorrow as part of its plan to chalk out the course of action for the assembly elections. It is quite likely that the meeting will discuss the probable candidates for majority of the assembly segments of both the Kashmir and Jammu divisions of the state. Sources told Early Times that since multiple names have come up as probable candidates for the assembly segments it would not be easy for party leaders to zero in on the final choices. It would be a herculean task for the party higher ups and leaders to take a final call on the mandate for the 87 seats of the state. It is quite likely that the final decision would be taken Congress President, Sonia Gandhi. All India Congress Committee (AICC) General Secretary, Ambika Soni who is also the party in-charge for Jammu & Kashmir is going to chair the session. Senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad who is the leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha and Pradesh Congress Committee President, Professor Saif-ud-din Soz along with the party leaders are going to take part in the meeting which is likely to be a brainstorming one. "Given the debacle the party suffered in the recent Lok Sabha elections it would be difficult for the party leaders to pick the right candidates for the assembly segments of the state. As the Bharatiya Janta Party virtually swept the recent parliamentary elections in Jammu division the party leaders are in a fix whom to choose and whom to keep out for the assembly elections," said sources. Sources said that Congress leaders are up against yet another difficulty. The party is yet to announce the chief ministerial candidate for the assembly elections and this may harm the party in long run. The delay in the announcement of the party chief ministerial candidate has not gone well with the party leaders and workers. "Consensus has eluded the party leaders over the announcement of chief ministerial candidate of the party for the assembly elections. Although most of the leaders and workers are in favour of announcing Azad as the chief ministerial candidate of the party there is a section who is opposing this move. Azad does not want to create any controversy in this regard and as such there has been delay in the announcement of chief ministerial candidate of Congress," said sources. Sources said that Congress party is also in a fix whether to forge any pre-poll alliance with any of the regional parties of the state. Most of the leaders and workers of the party are against any pre-poll arrangement with National Conference. These party people are very much in favour of striking a deal with PDP and want the party higher ups to take a final call in this regard. |
