JAMMU, June 22: Owing to Lackadaisical approaches of Power Development Department (PDD) at sector number 2 of Durga Nagar, four transformers have got damaged in the last 15 days.
Residents of the locality said that the transformers are getting damaged due to over and un-disclosed load. "There is nexus between linemen and some un-disclosed consumers of PDD, which is causing huge inconvenience to the residents, as power supply has remained disrupted for last four days", said Tarun Sharma, a local adding that the authorities should pay surprise visit to check nexus of power pilferage. "A 400 KVA transformer is supplying power to more than 500 houses. Being aware about the load, the department instead of installing a heavy transformer is replacing the same with the same capacity one," said Pradeep, a resident of Durga Nagar, adding that the state government has been hiking power tariff every year but, has failed to provide electricity which is adding to the sufferings of Jammuites.
"Government's decision of increasing power tariff is bereft of logic and rationale as power department is yet to improve power supply position both in the urban and rural areas," she said. "Every year; during summer, residents of Jammu face the same problem, but so far except promises nothing has been done to address their plight. Since the formation of coalition government, not even a single step has been taken to mitigate the woes of the people", said Rakesh a shopkeeper.
"We would not remain a mute spectator to the apathetic attitude of the government and people have a right protest over the power crises so that the concerned department addresses the problems," he asserted. "Power situation is going from bad to worse and present government has failed to undertake power reforms in J&K for which centre has have given huge funds. The fund has been diverted to other sectors", said Kunal Singh, a resident of Durga Nagar.
