| Amid opposition from Govt, others to Hindi, Jammu looks on to BJP 'initiative' | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, June 22: Amid all out opposition to Hindi to be used as medium in offices for the purpose of functioning and communication by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and others in the political spectrum of Kashmir, Jammu looks on once again to a firm initiative by BJP MPs at Centre at the behest of which this directive has been promulgated, to begin with in central government offices. Jammu suffers on this front in terms of utter discrimination in the wake of the fact majority of population in this region is Hindi Knowing and lacks skills in Urdu both at educational level as well as in the offices. Effort and will demonstrated in the past by some Jammu based legislators cutting across party lines in trying to have official material available in Hindi proved only cosmetic as this was not pursued vigorously to meanigful conclusion.
While the move with respect to Hindi language by Narender Modi led NDA govt has created furore in many parts of country and among political elite of various hues, J&K Chief Minister did not lag behind to show his opposition with arguments and contentions, particularly in favour of Urdu as official language of the state and therefore no scope of Hindi to be accommodated anywhere. This was supported by all others in the political spectrum of Kashmir, including even separatist politicians.While they have their own political reasons to respond in a loud and unequivocal manner like this, they would keep on opposing it tooth and nail. However as always there was mild, rather no response by Jammu based political class, be that from Congress, Panthers Party or BJP politicians to this opposition by Kashmir. Amid all this, common people in Jammu find this as one more opportunity for encouraging usage of Hindi at least in this region for fulfillment of minimum basic requirements where they suffer on account of all pervasive Urdu medium, they look on to a firm initiative this time by the BJP MPs at Centre in ensuring this to happen.
It was in the year 2007 BJP MLA Jugal Sharma along with COngress MLA Yogesh Sawhney and Panthers Party MLA Hasrh Dev Singh, supported by independent Ashwani Kumar moved a resolution for providing legislature material in Hindi . However, the then PDP led government with veteran legal luminary Muzaffar Baig responded positively and agreed that government would bring a proper bill to this effect. The coalition collapsed next year on account of Amarnath land agitation and the matter remained buried until during the tenure of present coalition when BJP once again raised the matter in the Assembly. The voices for want of strong support faded in the din of proceedings and the matter did not move any further.
It is pertinent to mention that majority popluation of the Jammu region is Hindi knowing and versed well with language in most of the districts. People suffer in matters pertaining to police and revenue departments where Urdu is predominantly used in all official works. Jammu also faces discrimination while candidates apply for for various posts in government departments where Urdu is the basic requirement. |
