| Ministers of constituencies | | No taker for Azad's suggestion | | Rustam
JAMMU, June 22: It was some two years ago that then Union Health Minister and former JKPCC president Ghulam Nabi Azad advised the Congress ministers in the state to behave like ministers by taking care of the needs of the people of the state and not focusing attention only on their respective constituencies. He gave this advice on the bank of river Tawi during a function organized on the occasion of installation of life size statue of Maharaja Hari Singh near a point where the flyover connects with Tawi Bridge. Azad had, in fact, snubbed the Congress ministers and told them that if the Congress was to put up a good show in the elections, they had to crisscross the state to listen to the people's problems and redress their grievances. And he took on the Congress ministers in the presence of the people, mostly Congressmen, and Deputy Chief Minister, Tara Chand. Mercifully, none of the Congress ministers heeded to the advice of Azad. On the contrary, they continued to behave like constituency ministers. It was not only Azad who told the Congress ministers to behave like genuine ministers behave and conduct. In-charge of Congress in Jammu & Kashmir Ambika Soni had also advised the Congress ministers to visit all the constituencies of the state, saying their conduct was not in the long term interest of the Congress. She gave advice to the Congress ministers at Hotel Ashoka in Jammu last year after many senior Congress leaders questioned the conduct of the ministers. Some of the critics had even gone to extent of saying that there were Congress ministers who only focused their attention on parts of their respective constituencies. On June 20 also Azad cautioned Congress ministers against confining their activities to their own respective constituencies. "Congress ministers should focus on all the constituencies for the overall development and not remain confined to their own constituencies," he said at Mogul Maidan, Chatroo, Chinghamin (Inderwal constituency). "There is one problem when an MLA becomes minister, he entirely focuses on his own constituency. But I want our ministers in the present regime to focus on all the areas of state so that the people in general are benefited," he was quoted as saying. So, it was for the third time that the Congress ministers were asked to focus attention on all the areas, but it is extremely doubtful if they would go by his advice. It would be only desirable to point out that one of the fundamental causes responsible for the humiliating defeat of the Congress candidates in the just-held Lok Sabha electionsin Jammu was the utter failure of the Congress ministers to address the issues facing the people even of their own constituencies. Leave aside the constituencies other than the ones they represent in the assembly. That the Congress candidates did not lead in Billawar, Gandhi Nagar, Akhnoor and Khour should clinch the whole issue. Billawar is represented by minister Manohar Lal, Gandhi Nagar by Raman Bhalla, akhnoor by Sham Lal Sharma and Khour by Tara Chand. Indeed, Azad did make a valid point by asking the Congress ministers to focus on all the areas of state. With elections on mind Congress to meet for finalization of party candidates. |
