Baig's brother to contest as independent from Sangrama
Row over PDP nominations
7/19/2014 10:05:52 PM
Srinagar, July 19: The announcements made by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has created friction among the party cadres more than giving them a reason to work in harmony ahead of assembly elections scheduled to be held in October-November this year. After a row over announcement of Dr Haseeb Drabu as a party candidate from Rajpora Pulwama where former PDP minister and senior leader Syed Bashir is up in his sleeves, now Mohammad Sadiq Beig, the party's senior leader in district Baramulla and brother of Muzaffar Hussian Baig has decided to contest the elections from Sangrama constituency as an independent candidate against his own party candidate Syed Basharat Bukhari. Talking to a local news agency Muhammad Sadiq Baig said: "The party (PDP) has sidelined everybody. I have been working as district vice president Baramulla since 2007 but all in vain. The name of PDP candidate Syed Basharat Bukhari has been announced from Gupkar and no panel was sought from the ground. No party workers were consulted before announcing his name."
When asked what impact his decision to contest against his own party candidate will have on relations with his brother Muzaffar Hussain Baig, he said: "The party politics is different from the family. These are entirely two different things. It will have no impact on our relations," Sadiq said. Pertinently, soon after the announcement of its list of candidates for different constituencies, PDP is grappling with infighting and undercurrent rebellion. The ruling National Conference has announced a list of 32 candidates in first phase, is reportedly also delaying its rest of the nominations fearing worst ever infighting over candidature.
