| Omar accepts defeat even before testing political waters | | NC in deep trouble | | Rustam Jammu, July 19: Working president of the National Conference (NC) Omar Abdullah is not just Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K). He also holds the vital home portfolio. As Home Minister he has several intelligence agencies at his disposal who keep him fully informed about the prevailing state of affairs as well as about the people's mood. Intelligence agencies, besides performing other important duties towards the state, also keep the Home Minister constantly informed about the popularity or otherwise of all the political players and all the political parties. But more than that, intelligence agencies keep on informing the Home Minister about who is doing what in the political field. In other words, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah as Home Minister is the most powerful person whose one of the duties is also to help the Election Commission of India (ECI) to hold free and fair electoral exercises. But Omar Abdullah is a different kind of Home Minister. He doesn't know who is doing what at what level. He has failed to click as Chief Minister as well as Home Minister. Besides, he has failed to lead his party from the front and establish his leadership. On Thursday, he did something he should have avoided; he only exposed himself and gave the people to understand that he was helpless as Chief Minister, helpless as Home Minister and helpless as working president of the NC. Infact, he raised his hands saying the PDP again could take recourse to all means to win the upcoming Assembly elections as it won the Lok Sabha elections. "PDP received huge sums from its mentors to buy support of people in the Lok Sabha elections and the party is planning to apply the same tactics in the Assembly elections," he said while addressing party workers convention at Srinagar, and added that the "PDP plans to utilize the ill-gotten money to tilt elections in its favours". By making these statements, Omar Abdullah not only insulted the people of Kashmir or termed them as a purchasable commodity, but also admitted that he failed help the ECI hold a free and fair election. Why did not he act against those who, according to him, vitiated the election scene during the Lok Sabha election? Why did not he and party colleagues lodge complaint against the PDP which, according to him, used ill-gotten money to tilt elections in its favour? What were his intelligence agencies doing and what was his police department doing? Let him answer these questions. What as far as the public opinion goes, it can be said that the just-held Lok Sabha elections were a free and fair democratic exercise. The people votes for the parties and the candidates they had faith in and rejected those who had failed to come up to their expectations. It's no use blaming others for the defeat. The NC and the Congress got what it deserved. And there are potent reasons to believe that the plight of the ruling coalition in the Assembly elections would be no different. In the meantime, the unwarranted statement of Omar Abdullah has evoked a very strong reaction from the PDP, with Haseeb Drabu charging Omar Abdullah with insulting the Kashmiri people. What Omar Abdullah on Thursday said would surely go against the NC. |
