| Police expedite probe into appearance of flags | | ISIS alarm sounded in Kashmir | | Fazal Khan SRINAGAR, Aug 6: A day after Chief Minister Omar Abdullah revealed that one Non Resident Kashmiri youth from Australia has joined a global militant outfit Islamic State of Iraq And Syria (ISIS) Jammu and Kashmir Police today expedited the investigations into the appearance of ISIS posters and flags in some parts of Srinagar, the summer capital of JK. Omar's assertion came amidst fears raised by rampant use of ISIS and Al-Qaeda flags by protesters during pro-Palestine demonstrations. The CM, however, said no youth from Kashmir so far has joined the group. "Heard that a Kashmiri youth from Australia has joined ISIS," the Chief Minister, who is also the Home Minister of the state, had told reporters. A top police official while talking to Early Times said the ISIS posters and flags appearing in Srinagar are a matter of concern. "We have expedited the investigations and are scanning the video footage of the area where these posters had appeared." He said that Police are also trying to identify the youth who during the recent pro-Palestine street protests were carrying the ISIS placards and flags. "We believe that some elements have infiltrated into Kashmir and they are making all the possible attempts to radicalize the Kashmiri youth. People behind this entire process know that it is easy to lure unemployed Kashmiri youth. Police are on the job and very soon we would find out whether anyone in Kashmir is in touch with the ISIS or not," the officer added. Another top official said that security agencies are on toes and cannot take any chances as NATO forces are in the process of leaving Afghanistan at present. "There is every possibility about terror from Afghanistan and Pakistan spilling over to Kashmir. Prior to ISIS issue, posters of Al-Qaeda have appeared in Kashmir on many occasions. Even the Afghan militants have issued threatening statements claiming that Kashmir is their next target," he added. The officer said that security agencies are working on many angles and one of them is the nexus between the ISIS and the Al-Qaeda. Pertinently, the General Officer Commanding of Srinagar based Chinar Corps Lt Gen Subrata Saha, while commenting on the appearance of ISIS flags last week had said: "All I can say is it deserves and is getting the highest security concerns from all of us." Police sources said the ISIS flags first time appeared in Kashmir during a pro-Palestine protest outside Jamia Masjid in old city and since then, the flags have been displayed at least five times including once in city centre Lal Chowk. On Eid day, besides ISIS flags, the flags of Al Qaeda and Taliban were waved by youth in Eidgah area of old city. At several places in Srinagar, the pro-ISIS graffiti have appeared. In Batamaloo neighborhood of Srinagar, there is a graffiti, which reads: 'Welcome ISIS'. "Many youth in Kashmir are embracing ISIS and Al-Qaeda ideology in Kashmir it's a dangerous trend and can have a far reaching consequences," said a top Army officer. |
