'Pak making desperate attempts to push militants ahead of LA polls'
LoC firing in Jammu triggers panic across Kashmir
10/13/2014 11:31:30 PM
Early Times Report
Srinagar, Oct 13: As Indian and Pakistani armed forces are trading fire at the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu region, Border Security Force (BSF) and Army in frontier areas of Kashmir have stepped up vigil to prevent Pakistan from trying to indulge in any "misadventure" from this side.
Sources told Early Times that armed forces have been put on alert in the sensitive pockets, including Uri, Kupwara, Gurez, Tulalil, Nowgam and other areas in north Kashmir.
Armed forces, according to the sources, are strengthening the bunkers and shifting the ammunition to the upper areas near LoC to remain prepared for tackling any emerging situation.
Ceasefire violations in Jammu region have created panic in the villages near the LoC in north Kashmir as the residents apprehend that firing can spread and their areas can become the targets of Pakistani shelling.
A source said that there is every possibility of Pakistan trying to violate ceasefire along LoC in Kashmir region as Assembly polls are likely to be held in December this year. "Pakistan will make desperate attempts to push militants into this side ahead of the elections. They (militants) cannot sneak in till Pakistan army provides them cover and resorts to firing," the source said, adding, "Security agencies have already warned that hundreds of militants are waiting to cross over into Indian territory from Pakistan occupied Kashmir."
Pertinently, since 1990 whenever any elections were held in Jammu and Kashmir, militants tried their best to disrupt the process by targeting political workers, political rallies and civilians.
A source said that recent floods which hit the Kashmir have displaced the militants who are present in the Valley and their ammunition stores have also taken a hit. "Armed forces are preparing themselves to handle double assault. If elections are held on time militants would try to make their presence felt within the Valley while Pakistan army would try to violate the ceasefire along the LoC to push more and more militants into this side," he added.
The source said the intelligence inputs suggest that Pakistan is violating the ceasefire along the LoC in Jammu region to divert the attention of the armed forces from Kashmir. "They want forces to remain busy in the Jammu side so that militants are able to sneak into Kashmir areas," he said, "In 2014 militants suffered huge setbacks as their top leadership has been wiped out and many of them were killed in the gunfights with the armed forces," he added.
Sources said that strong counter infiltration grid along the LoC in Kashmir region has forced militants to change their infiltration routes and they are now eyeing Jammu region. "So far Pakistan army has not succeeded in pushing militants from Jammu side as armed forces have given it a befitting reply. They are targeting civilian areas in Jammu region to make armed forces shift their focus but till now they haven't succeeded," the source added.
"Pakistan has failed to push in militants from Jammu region. It may know to target the vulnerable areas in Kashmir and LoC may flare up in the Valley. We are gearing up to face any challenge. Our forces will thwart any such attempt which is aimed at disrupting the election process or targeting civilians," said an official.
