Azad's RS stint hinges on Cong performance in JK

Early Times Report

New DelhiI, Nov 4 : Will Congress be forced to look for a new leader of opposition in the Rajya Sabha? Ghulam Nabi Azad is unlikely to get a nomination from Uttarakhand that makes him dependent on the party getting enough numbers in Jammu & Kashmir elections to win a seat in the Upper House.
Indications are that a local candidate may be preferred in Uttarakhand where intense lobbying is going on for the sole seat that has fallen vacant after the resignation of BJP MP Bhagat Singh Koshiyari who was elected to the Lok Sabha.
Former chief minister Vijay Bahuguna is said to be pulling out all stops to secure nomination, with the proposal that his son can contest the Sitarganj assembly seat that he would vacate. AICC general secretary Ambika Soni is in the state for a feedback and held a meeting of the state party unit on organizational issues.
The push for a local candidate in Uttarakhand, sources said, may have nixed Azad's chances of finding a safe seat for the Upper House where he is the leader of opposition. Azad's term comes to an end in February but the tricky bit is that his renomination from his home state would depend on the Congress performance in Jammu & Kashmir in November elections.
Congress is bracing for a tough election in J&K where BJP is likely to put up a strong show in Congress strongholds while PDP is seen as the main player in the entire state. Congress lost all the seats in the state in the Lok Sabha elections. It also does not have an ally after snapping the ties with National Conference that is facing a tough battle.
Sources said Azad may have to depend on J&K to reenter the Upper House. If that fails, Congress may have to find a new leader in Rajya Sabha.
A possible replacement, sources said, would be Anand Sharma who is deputy leader of opposition. The Rajya Sabha elections are set to become tricky for Congress in the wake of its losing grip on states. Immediately after the Lok Sabha decimation, the party has lost Haryana and Maharashtra and is not looking good in Jharkhand and Jammu & Kashmir.
