Blowing aberration out of proportion for political mileage, NC adding fuel to fire | Budgam Killings | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Nov 4: Notwithstanding the fact that Army has regretted the inadvertent killing of two youth in a firing incident in central Kashmir's Budgam district, ruling National Conference today swung into action to derive political mileage out of it and tried to add fuel to the fire by issuing the provocative statements against the Army. The Chief Minister Omar Abdullah was the first one to react. He tweeted: "Deaths of two youth in Army firing in Budgam have vitiated the election atmosphere in the Valley. Such killings have no place in an otherwise improving security environment where militancy incidents are at record low levels." Soon after the incident yesterday Army had issued a detailed statement about the sequence of events which led to the "unfortunate incident." Army regretted the loss of life and ordered a probe to look into the circumstances which led to the soldiers opening fire. The Army spokesman in a statement said: "Based on the specific intelligence reports about the movement of militants in a white Maruti 800 Car along Nowgam to Pulwama road, three Mobile Vehicle Check Posts (MVCP) were established along the road. At approximately, 5 PM, a white Maruti 800 Car approached the first check point where the Army personnel tried to stop the car but it did not stop. Again at the second check point, the vehicle was stopped but it did not stop. At the third check point, the vehicle tried to barge through the check point, resulting into a firing incident in which four persons were injured." "The injured were rushed to the Army Base Hospital, Srinagar. Two persons succumbed to their injuries and two are under treatment," he had said. "Army regrets the loss of lives and has ordered an enquiry to investigate into the circumstance leading to the incident. Anyone found guilty will be severely dealt with." "Despite Army making it clear that firing was not intentional NC leaders joined the separatists to castigate the Army. It forgot that Army is under tremendous pressure to ensure that no untoward incident takes place during elections," said an analyst. He said that Army has been mobilized in the sensitive areas to prevent political killings and to keep militants at bay. There are reports that militants are desperate to make their presence felt. "Had soldiers fired intentionally they would not have shifted the other two youth to their own hospital at Badami Bagh for the treatment. NC is trying to blow an aberration out of proportion," he added. Politicians need to understand that security has been beefed up to ensure that they remain safe and carry out their political activities without any threat. "It's unfortunate that the Chief Minister has forgotten the role which Army jawans played during the recent floods and how many lives did they save," said a Kashmir watcher. Not only Omar, his uncle Dr Sheikh Mustafa Kamaal also joined the chorus and used absurd words to lash out at the Army. "National Conference leaders know it very well that their chances of winning the forthcoming Assembly elections are bleak. First they tried to ensure that polls get delayed but they didn't succeed in their attempts. Now they are giving provocative statements to vitiate the atmosphere and are propagating ant-India feelings to appease the separatists and other anti-national elements. By doing so they want to trigger unrest and add fuel to the fire," the Kashmir watcher added. He said that Abdullah family has forgotten that when raiders invaded Kashmir in 1947, it was the Indian Army which chased them away and present Chief Minister's late grandfather Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah was instrumental in facilitating Indian Army's landing in Kashmir. "Politicians irrespective of the party they belong to should realize that if Army lowers the guard their survival in the strife torn Kashmir is impossible. If they hate the security forces so much then why do they need security cover? Before castigating the security forces they should think hundred times. It is due to the invaluable sacrifices rendered by the Army Jawans that a level of normalcy has been restored in Kashmir," he added. |
