Wagah border blast exposes chinks in Pak security | | | When a suicide bomber detonated a powerful bomb at Wagah on Sunday, during the flag lowering ceremony on the border it did not only resulted in the killing of over 60 people but it affected also the trade transactions between the two sides. Land border trade between India and Pakistan was halted on Monday following a suicide bomb attack at Wagah in Pakistan that left 60 people dead..Customs officials here said that there was no trade activity from either side following's Sunday's blast that left over a 100 injured. The blast took place at Wagah, just 500 metres from the international border gates between both countries. They said that the trading activity is likely to remain suspended for another two days.Hundreds of trucks from both countries carry products, including fruits and vegetables, through the land border trade.Security on the Indian side remained on high alert following the blast. The Retreat ceremony done by border guards, Border Security Force (BSF) in India and Pakistan Rangers in Pakistan, has been suspended for three days after a request from the Pakistan side following the explosion. The death toll in the horrific suicide attack that shook Pakistan minutes after the popular flag-lowering ceremony at Wagah climbed to 61 on Monday, even as security agencies arrested about 20 suspects from the Indo-Pak border area.Ten women, eight children and three security personnel were among the 61 people who have died in the attack that took place when a suicide attacker detonated a powerful bomb at Wagah. What was intriguing is the timing of the blast. On every day several thousand people gather on either side of the border to watch the lowering of the flags, the Indian flag from the Indian side and the Pakistani flag on the other side.Invariably the flag lowering ceremony is eye catching and people get glued to it with the result security forces too remain vigilant.About 43 bodies have been handed over to the families while the remaining are yet to be recognized.Pakistan has sought the help of the National Registration Database Authority (Nadra) for recognition of 18 bodies. The law enforcement agencies have launched operation in the residential areas in Wagah and taken about 20 suspects into custody. A joint investigation team of Police, Rangers and Intelligence agencies have started its probe into the incident. The army and rangers along with police will provide security to Ashura processions in Lahore and they have been put on high alert in the wake of Sunday's attack. Reports do indicate that terrorists, especially those belonging to the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan outfit may have engineered the blast. It is being stated that the suicide attack was an attempt at diverting the attention of the Army which had been engaged in a major operations against the terrorists in the Tribal areas. During the last one week more than 100 terrorists have been killed and many others have been forced to flee to safer places after the Pakistani aircrafts pounded hideouts of terrorists. In fact the premier intelligence agency,RAW,had sent its report to the Government of India, Army and the BSF on possible terrorist strike during the flag lowering ceremony across the Wagah border which had put the Indian forces on high alert. The RAW report had been sent to the Punjab police too as its contingent also keeps a watch on the border at Wagah. However, since there was no agreement between India and Pakistan on sharing of reports or inputs from the intelligence agencies India had to watch the development as a passive spectator. The suicide attack should be an eye opener for the establishment in Islamabad. And time has come when Pakistan should reach an agreement with India on sharing of intelligence inputs and reports which could help the two sides in initiating measures for preventing terrorists from carrying out their subversive activities. But for reaching such an agreement there should be perfect understanding between the two sides. And this perfect understanding which is devoid of mistrust can be possible if Pakistan finally decides to stop exporting terror to India. And this is the only condition laid down by New Delhi for resumption of dialogue with Islamabad. Pakistan had, over the years, opened camps for providing arms training to militants who later were to be pushed into Jammu and Kashmir and into other Indian states for escalating the level of violence. Unfortunately this very act of sowing seeds of terror has boom ranged and Pakistan is in for bigger security challenges than what India is facing.Hence it is time for Pakistan to seek cooperation from India for launching a joint operation against terrorists of various hues.In this lies the chances of survival for Pakistan and its fragile democracy. |
