7 years on, TD fails to utilize equipment worth Rs 75 lacs | | | Arun Singh ET Report Jammu, Dec 6: The faulty planning on the part of Directorates of Jammu and Kashmir regions can be gauged from the fact that they purchased adventure equipments worth Rs 76 lakhs without formulating plans for their utilization and promotion of adventure as a result the equipments remained unutilized even after seven years of their purchase. Sources told Early Times that the Directorate of Tourism Jammu had purchased adventure equipment like white water river rafts, kayaks, mountaineering equipment etc. for Rs 36 lakh during the period 2007-9 but department failed to utilize them and only rented out rafting equipment to two private firms on few occasions. "The rest of the equipments like kayaks and mountaineering equipment had never been used for promotion of adventure activities in the Jammu region, though some of the mountaineering equipments were issued September 2011 to Jawahar Institute of Mountaineering and Winter Sports (JIM) Pahalgam as department failed to formulate plans for their utilization and promotion of adventure activities," they added. Similarly the Director Tourism Kashmir also purchased in 2006 adventure equipment valuing Rs 30 lakhs under the project 'Development of Leh' which were never dispatched to Leh due to non availability of equipment stores at Leh and were lying in the stores at Srinagar till date. "Despite the fact that there was no arrangement for the storage of these equipments but Directorate took illogical decision to purchase equipments worth Rs 30 lakh which remained lying at Srinagar due to department negligence," they added. Despite unwarranted delay of more than seven years on the part of directorates of both regions, the senior officials of the concerned department have been saying that the promotion of adventure tourism is on at its initial and making all out efforts to promote it and requesting the Administrative Department to increase the funds allotment for creating adventure sports infrastructure in the region. |
