SRINAGAR, Dec 7 : Security has been beefed up across Kashmir valley as Prime Minister Narendra Modi is arriving here to address an election rally at the Sher-I-Kashmir Cricket Stadium on Monday. The forces and police personnel have been put on high alert to ensure that no untoward incident takes place. The venue of the election rally has virtually been sealed off by the police and security forces personnel. Barricades have been erected at many places leading towards the venue of the election rally. People are being frisked at various places in order to ensure that no untoward incident takes place. Militant attacks across Kashmir on Friday have put onus on the security establishment to take extra security measures so that no militant attack takes place in vicinity of the venue of the election rally. Twenty one persons including eight army personnel, three policemen, eight militants and two civilians were killed in these attacks. In the summer capital of the state all the roads leading towards the venue of rally have been barricaded. Police and security forces personnel could be seen stopping pedestrians and vehicles at many places in the Srinagar city. Body checking of people along with the thorough checking of the vehicles was carried out at these places. This led to inconvenience to the people and they could be seen fuming at the heightened security set up. From Pantha Chowk crossing onwards no vehicle was allowed the Badami Bagh area and as such all the vehicles coming from Jammu or South Kashmir were diverted via the bye-pass connecting Srinagar with South and North Kashmir. Due to the diversion huge rush of the vehicles could be seen and frequent traffic jams were also witnessed. Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) have established nakas at various places in the city and in the outskirts as well. These include Lal Chowk, Rambagh, Jehangir Chowk, TRC Crossing, Ikhwan Crossing, Parimpora and Pantha Chowk. People are being stopped at these nakas and they are subjected to questioning by the police and CRPF personnel. Due to the heightened security set up lesser number of people moved out of their houses today and those who moved out ensured that they are back before the sunset. Bus service to city areas like Sonwar, Batwara and Shivpora remained suspended since these areas fall in the vicinity of the cricket stadium, the venue of the rally. People living in these areas had to cover the distance on foot or reach Dalgate to catch a bus for Lal Chowk or for any other onward destination. Sharp shooters have been put in place in the adjacent areas of the venue of the rally and every person who is seen moving near the cricket stadium is also subjected to frisking and body searches. The road leading towards cricket stadium from TRC crossing has been sealed with concertina wires and no vehicle other than security vehicles are allowed to move ahead. There is a sense of fear among the people of summer capital and everybody is apprehensive as far as holding of election rally in city centre is concerned. People hope and pray that the day passes off peacefully with no untoward incident taking place. |
