Pampore all set for tough electoral battle | | | Muhammad Mukaram
Early Times Report
Pampore, Dec 7: Kashmir's saffron town, Pampore is all set for a tough electoral battle on December 9 between National Conference and Peoples Democratic Party PDP). Political observers said that it would be interesting to see the electoral battle of National Conference's new face as he is contesting first time from this constituency. However they said, "PDP has very good chance to secure the seat and will give a tough fight to opponents." However, In the 2008 assembly elections the incumbent PDP MLA Zahoor Ah Mir registered win by nearly 5300 votes. While as the runner up candidate from Indian National Congress Mohammad Anwar Bhat got 5800 votes, and the National Conference candidate was last in the race. Although in this assembly segment PDP and Congress were the main contestants in past two assembly elections, however Yawar Masoodi's entry into the fray has now made the contest interesting between PDP and NC. NC's new coin Masoodi, though new to politics, is alst Masoodi. All the candidates have been aggressively campaigning for votes and incumbent PDP MLA Zahoor Mir in fact had launched a door-to-door campaign months before the elections were announced. The contest right now seems between Masoodi'd 'new ideas', and Zahoor Mir's good work in the constituency and long time experience as a senior political activist. The Pampore constituency segment traditionally is a low-poll one and if the hot and volatile areas like Khrew which has at least 7000 votes continues with its boycott precedence, the candidates would have to fight for 'out-of-khrew -area" votes only. The incumbent PDP MLA Zahoor Ahmed Mir talked to Early Times said "Inshallah my victory is done. I am very much confident that the people will vote for PDP this time also. In the earlier parliamentary elections Pampore constituency has witnessed at least 4500 votes. Out of which PDP has got 4200 votes." According to political analysts, they said in last assembly elections many voters hesitated to come out for vote due to boycott call of separatists and thus PDP won the seat easily but this time it seems to be very interesting battle between PDP and NC as seen the higher voter turnout in the first two phases of assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir. While Early Times talked to various youth's in the constituency they said "if we will get the chance to caste our vote, we will definitely vote for PDP as National Conference has always ignored South Kashmir." However the some people in Khrew town of Pampore constituency said large number of people to vote for National Conference which would make it difficult for the PDP to retain this seat this time around. However the weakening of Congress Party in the region may come as a relief for the PDP in the region as recently many prominent workers of Congress have joined the PDP party recently. In the last assembly elections Congress emerged as a second runner up in the constituency and got 5800 votes. |
