Early Times Report

Jammu, Dec 7: In an astounding incident, the interim Vice Chancellor University of Jammu, Prof. RD Sharma has not only refused to take cognizance of the written complaint of a woman scholar against a senior professor and Head of the Department, but even denied to admit the complaint in which serious allegations of harassment were leveled against the accused.
Ritu Devi, D/O Tirath Ram, R/O Jourian, a scholar of the Department of Dogri, pursuing her research work since 2010 in a written complaint (in possession of ET) to the Vice Chancellor had alleged that despite her best efforts to complete her research, her guide, Prof. Shiv Dev Singh had not only been ignoring her work, but insulting and ridiculing her. "My guide had been calling me a villager who had no idea of research even though he himself had submitted to the former HoD that I had completed 75% of my research and he was satisfied with my work," read the complaint. The Prof. had also been forcing her to give up her research as the latter had joined department of School Education as a teacher two years back.
The complainant had confessed in her written complaint that her work was deliberately ignored and derided and here repeated visits to the department from Jourian, her repeated calls and messages were ignored by her guide with the sole motive of coercing and subjugating her even as her works were published in noted vernacular publications and she even earned a certificate of excellence at the National Research Workshop held at Mysore.
President JURSEA, Sukhdev Singh, reacting to the issue said that it was unfortunate that the VC who is head of the institution refused to entertain the complaint of the woman scholar and asked her demeaning questions that made the complainant break down while leaving his office. "It is unfortunate that the interim VC is under the influence of JUTA and took a biased view of the entire episode, which is very unbecoming of the high office he occupies," said Singh.
"It was inappropriate on part of the VC not to accept the complaint as every such complaint from a woman student/scholar or a staff member needs to be investigated and the JU has a committee in place for the purpose. In all wisdom, the VC should have accepted the complaint and referred the matter to the committee" said a senior JU professor pleading anonymity.
Meanwhile, it has been learnt that the accused professor had earlier been removed from the headship of the Dogri Department by the previous Vice Chancellor following allegations of misappropriation, but the order was kept in abeyance due to intervention of JUTA in the matter. Insiders also divulge that it is not the isolated case as many a scholars pursuing their research work have been harassed by their guides for years and their complaints are confronted with more harassment.
