LPG, Power go missing; Kargil up in arms against J&K Govt | Intense cold wave | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Dec 29: With mercury plummeting further in Ladakh region, Kargil is up in arms against LPG distributors and Power Development Department (PDD) of Jammu and Kashmir. The agitated people of Kargil district blocked the Kargil-Sankoo Road near Baroo where all the district offices are located. They raised slogans against the administration and LPG distribution for allegedly being unable to put a lid on the black-marketing and other wrongs being committed by the distributors across Kargil district. They alleged that distributors had created artificial shortage and were deliberately delaying sale of the gas cylinders. As the protests intensified, the protestors did not allow the vehicle of Deputy Commissioner Kargil to pass. Deputy Commissioner Kargil Mohammad Sadiq Sheikh had to come down the vehicle and talk to the protestors. He came down and assured the protestors that action would be taken if the complaints of artificial scarcity are found true. He further told that he would ensure that gas cylinders if available are distributed within 48 hours to those who are desperately in need. Thereafter, sources said that Sadiq Sheikh immediately order inquiry into the complaint of non-availability of gas cylinders. The two member committee which has been assigned the task includes DeputySuperintendent of Police (DySP) Headquarters and Assistant Director (CAPD). They have been asked to inspect the stores of the Indian LPG Distributer and find out the reason for shortage of the Cylinders. Allegations are that from the last one week after the central government launched DPTL Scheme, rumour was spread deliberately that from January 1, 2015; Gas Cylinders will be issued on commercial rates. Official sources said that after this rumour was spread, demand for Gas Cylinders touched heights and the Distributer of Indane LPG Gas was unable to meet such high demand within short period of time. This led to chaos and ultimately, shortage of cylinders. Official sources said that the issue has been taken up with Secretary to Government of India, Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas to extend the period of registration of Consumers under PAHAL (DBTL) Scheme for 3 months beyond the stipulated date keeping in view the harsh weather conditions. A review committee has also been constituted under the Chairmanship of the Additional Deputy Commissioner Kargil to review the scheme on monthly basis and submit the report to the office of the Deputy Commissioner Kargil at the end of each month. Not only shortage of gas cylinders, 18 villages of Kargil district are without electricity and none in the state administration has come out with details of this huge populace being without electricity. These villages are without electricity since the last more than six days. People in Kargil are upset and have been agitating against what they describe as step-motherly treatment by the District Administration as well as Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) Kargil. |
