Early Times Report

Jammu, Dec 29: Fearing that new government led by People’s Democratic Party (PDP) would expose his and Omar Abdullah's misdeeds, Devender Singh Rana, the close lieutenant of the outgoing Chief Minister, is leaving no stone unturned to reach out to PDP.
Sources told Early Times that Rana has got it conveyed to PDP that if it forms the next government in the state along with Congress it need not worry about the independent MLAs, as NC would provide tactical support to the government at the floor of the House and NC members would vote in its favour.
Though the Congress leaders are learnt to have conveyed this message to PDP, sources maintained that there has been no response from the other side. Sources said, "Fear of re-opening of Haji Mohammad Yousuf's murder case and safety of his business interests have made Devinder Singh Rana most desperate for some space in new political dispensation."
Despite rejection of his party in the Assembly polls, in which National Conference was decimated to 15 seats from 28, Rana is running from pillar to post for some political combination in which the NC could have a say, if not the partnership. "Rana has more friends in Congress and Bharatiya Janta Party than in National Conference and he is leaving no stone unturned to explore the prospects of any combination with a role for NC," sources said.
They said Rana has been left dejected and alone as his boss Omar Abdullah has left for London and Mufti's party has virtually ruled out any alliance with NC. "Rana is personally approaching the senior Congress leaders to foil the attempts of a possible BJP-PDP coalition," sources added.
"Rana's objective is to keep the BJP out of power and install a weak government with dependence on National Conference so that misdeeds of the erstwhile regime led by his boss remain under the carpet," they said.
"Initial moves for a possible BJP-NC alliance after the declaration of election results, were also initiated by Rana but the Valley based party MLAs punctured these attempts by threatening a revolt. Since a PDP-NC alliance is not possible Rana is using the Congress leaders for conveying his party's message of friendship to Muftis," sources added.
