Abdullah dynasty becomes irrelevant in Kashmir | Ignominious defeat | | Neha
Early Times Report
JAMMU, Dec 29: The election results in Jammu and Kashmir on December 23 have established that the Abdullah dynasty, which dominated the state's political scene for decades, has become almost irrelevant even in the Kashmir's fractured political arena. It is not an exaggeration; it's a statement of fact and can be easily verified. How did the electorates in Sonawar, Beerwah and Gulmarg treat NC working president and the then Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and his outspoken and essentially anti-India uncle and the Sheikh Abdullah's son Mustafa Kamaal? An answer to this question would prove the point that the Abdullah dynasty has lost all its sheen and appeal and become irrelevant for all practical purposes at least for some years. In Sonawar, Omar Abdullah suffered an ignominious defeat at the hands of PDP candidate. He lost the election to him by 4700 votes. He got 9500 votes and the PDP candidate got 14283 votes. In Beerwah, Omar Abdullah did succeed in making it to the Assembly but it could not be described as a victory in the real sense of the term. He won the election only by 910 votes. Sonawar and Beerwah were the two Assembly constituencies in the Valley which were considered "safe" for him by his poll managers. His poll managers and he himself were of the view that if the NC working president would re-seek election from the Ganderbal constituency - Abdullah family's pocket borough --, he would suffer a massive defeat. That Omar Abdullah was defeated by the Beerwah electorate and that he could not win the Sonawar seat should clinch the whole issue and indicate the extent to which the Abdullah dynasty has become unpopular in the Kashmir Valley. What about Sheikh Mustafa Kamaal, who never missed any opportunity to spew venom on India, the Indian Army, PDP, BJP and the Congress and the Indian Constitutional framework and arouse communal passions in the Valley in his desperate bid to establish a chord with the Kashmiri Muslims and establish that the Abdullah dynasty represented the Kashmiris' will and aspirations? He forfeited his security deposit in the Gulmarg assembly constituency and the electorate of the constituency relegated him to the fourth place. He got only 9275 votes, as against 22957 votes the winning PDP candidate Mohammad Abass Wani got, the sitting MLA and former Agriculture Minister Ghulam Hassan Mir got 20145 votes and the independent candidate Shabir Ahmad Mir got 11083 votes. That Mustafa Kamaal got less votes as compared to the vote share of an Independent candidate was another proof that there are no takers of the Abdullah dynasty left in the Valley. It is time for Omar Abdullah, Mustafa Kamaal and others in the dynasty to sit up and find where they went wrong and why the Abdullah dynasty has become unpopular. At the same time, it is important to note that the election results have punctured the NC's autonomy balloon. To be more precise, the exit of Omar Abdullah from the office of Chief Minister is a good riddance. |
