Police all set to launch crackdown against anti-national, anti-social elements | | | Majid Nabi
Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Jan 9: Security agencies scrutinizing 'frivolities' on social networking sites are likely to go tough against the people who create controversial atmosphere by indulging in anti-social activities that generate vengeance among the masses in this 'susceptible' zone. With the aim to incite sadism and stretch communal hatred in the state, number of unauthorized news groups on cross-platform mobile messaging application 'WhatsApp' and well-liked social networking site 'facebook' have been created to ignite debates on social as well as political issues. Highly placed sources claimed that several pages have been created on facebook in the name of prominent national news channels besides dozens of fake news groups have come up on WhatsApp to sensationalize events and news. "We are seriously monitoring the activities and cross examining the news items being posted on facebook and WhatsApp to ascertain their authenticity. We have also identified some people who use to create controversial atmosphere by pasting fake news," sources told Early Times. When contacted media in-charge of Jammu & Kashmir Police, Manoj Sheeri said that police has already arrested number of people for running fake news groups and efforts are on trace further to weed out this 'menace'. "We are scrutinizing activities of every users be it on facebook or WhatsApp and have arrested many people for spreading controversial atmosphere. Our efforts will continue to track those whose aim is to provoke sadism," said Manoj. Sources further said that the situation is being carefully assessed by the security agencies before taking the action under law against these fake news groups in the larger public interest and for maintenance of law and order. "We will not let anyone to breach the peace here, news updates being posted on facebook and WhatsApp are highly objectionable which cannot be taken for granted. This is not the only mess but there are some other easy tools to create communal rifts by pasting objectionable pictures or pieces which are enough to incite fissures," sources said adding that everybody cannot become a journalist because these fake news operators openly violate ethics of journalism through non-professionalism. Sources said that some people on behest of anti-national elements are running fake news groups and portals to create political storm in the valley. It is pertinent to mention during 2010 summer unrest the district administration issued several 'advisories' to 'cable operators to tone down' their coverage followed by a communique directing all local channels to slash airtime of news and current affairs shows from 24 hours to a mere 15 minutes at a stipulated time every day. However as the situation deteriorated in the valley, the channels were asked to stop telecast news altogether. |
