Bandipora villages witness 15-hr power cut

bandipora, Jan 9: Scores of rural areas witnessed a 15 hour-long power cut, causing inconvenience to the residents. The supply was snapped around 6 pm and restored 9 am. People protested against PDD in Bandipora district of north Kashmir.
Unscheduled power cuts continue to irk consumers in the metered and non-metered areas of Bandipora district.
According to sources, "The situation of Bandipora town is no different. Many remote villages, including Hajin, Madvan, Sumlar, Preng, Athwatoo, Benlipora, Kulhama, Leharwalpora, Saidunara and other adjoining villages complained that these villages are facing acute shortage of power.
Irshad Ahmad of Madhvan, the consumer told early times that the power supply was erratic for the past one week and voltage was also low and that too in Harsh winters, where one needs an extra voltage.
He said that "The electricity is disrupted for almost 15 hours in a day despite that we are paying a monthly power tariff of Rs 335. The voltage is so low that it fails to illuminate even a small room. We have no choice but to take dinner in candlelight.
Local residents of Hajin, Soudnara and other adjacent areas said that power was playing hide and seek and during night hours, the supply went off for hours. They said they were forced to pay the power tariff according to the curtailment schedule but electricity was not provided to them.
However Students said they were the worst sufferers. "We are forced to study under candlelight. One major reason behind dismal performance in studies is erratic power supply," claimed Danish Rehman, a student of class 12th.
Meanwhile residents of Guzerbal hamlet of Bandipora district has also complained of erratic power supply in their area. Locals from Guzerbal area telephoned early times and said that they are without electricity for last 22 years, the villagers had took to roads for the first time and staged a peaceful protest against the Power Development Department (PDD). Mohammad Ramzan a native of Guzerbal village said that the electricity supply to the village was damaged two decades back in the floods of 1992.
Our village is hardly five to six kilometres far from the district headquarters but still it is without electricity from last 22 years, local said.
We fail to understand that, what sort of curtailment schedule is this in which we have to see the electricity for 2 hours and somewhere for one hour only, locals added.
