M. Karunanidhi re-elected as DMK chief for 11th time | | | Agencies CHENNAI, Jan 9: M. Karunanidhi has been unanimously re-elected president of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhgam (DMK) for a 11th consecutive term at the age of 91, given the job of heading the party's campaign in next year's Tamil Nadu assembly elections, likely to be his last. Facing no opposition, K. Anbazhgan was re-elected as general secretary and M.K. Stalin, the third son of Karunanidhi, re-elected as treasurer by the DMK's general council Karunanidhi was first elected party president on 27 July, 1969 after the demise of DMK founder C.N. Annadurai. The patriarch being chosen party chief again shows that he will be running for the chief minister's post for a sixth term in next year's state polls, when the DMK will be attempting to unseat the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK). The AIADMK is vulnerable without the charismatic J. Jayalalithaa, who has had to step down as chief minister after being convicted of corruption. Also on Friday, Karunanidhi's daughter Kanimozhi, a suspect in the 2G telecom spectrum case, was elevated as secretary of the DMK women's wing. Former telecom minister A. Raja, the main suspect in the case, remains propoganda secretary. The elections mark the culmination of the 14th organisational elections in the DMK. Despite experiencing a lean phase since the 2011 Assembly elections when it faced a rout, followed by a drubbing in the Lok Sabha elections last year, the elections saw the active participation of about 8.5 million party members. The DMK's general council on Friday adopted a resolution urging all political parties to bury regional and ideological differences to unite against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government at the Centre that it said was "explicitly communal." "All political parties and other movements which believe in secularism and unity in diversity, should bury their regional and political differences and oppose the communal threat that has befallen the country because of the government's activities," the party said. |
