Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Jan 9: Residents of flood affected Boatman colony in the Bemina area allege that the previous state governments failed to rehabilitate them in a proper manner. Life has turned to be tough soon after their relocation from Chinar Bagh.
While every government promised them of providing proper houses to live in, however in the name of rehabilitation authorities have snatched their livelihood.
"We were promised to get better houses to live in, but in the name of rehabilitation we just got ruined mud and tin sheds. Nothing really changed for us," said Mohammad Abdullah, a resident of the colony.
Reportedly dozens of houses in this colony were partially or fully damaged in the recent devastating floods, adding to the worries of the residents.
"It seems that miseries are in our fortune. Several houses in the colony were damaged by floods, which also brought muck and dirt with it. As poor people live in this area, no one cares to visit us or clear this dirt," said a group of locals.
The locality in Bemina area used to be deserted before the present dwellers moved in 1990. Reportedly the colony was created for the families relocated from Chinar Bagh on the banks of Dal Lake and the aim to relocate them was to increase the area of the lake and also prevent pollution of water bodies.
"Before settling at this colony, we lived in Chinar Bagh and other peripheries of Dal Lake in houseboats and shacks. They saved water bodies and left us to suffer. In the name of rehabilitation every comfort of ours was snatched," said Mohammad Burhan, a local. The residents said that they were assured of government jobs after relocation but were 'abandoned' and forced to do menial work to run their families.
"Most of us were involved with tourism for livelihood. When we left Chinar Bagh they destroyed our houseboats and assured us government jobs but that day never came and we were deceived," said Nisar Ahmad, a resident of the colony.
At present the colony consists of around 700 households and most of the houses in the colony are half constructed, while the recent flood has left its marks in the colony with bad condition of roads and lack of drainage system in the colony posing inconvenience to the residents.
Besides the civic complaints, the residents held that they have lost their identity since they shifted here and they had to bear taunts from other communities living in the area.
