PDP-BJP coalition to focus on development to protect vote bank
2/5/2015 11:22:25 PM
Early Times Report

Jammu, Feb 5 : The proposed BJP-PDP coalition Government, which is expected to assume office within the next 10 days, has decided to lay emphasis on "Vikaas"(development) instead of concentrating on extraneous issues. Party sources said that senior PDP and BJP leaders, who interacted during the last 10 days, agreed to focus the Government's attention on development activities so that people in the state discerned the difference between good governance and mis-rule or poor governance.
The leaders of the two parties have also decided to keep all the contentious issues, including future of Article 370 and lifting of AFSPA, under the carpet and instead ensure that various schemes aimed at improving the lot of people were implemented. The leaders of the two parties have decided to lay emphasis on improving power generation, lift irrigation which could reduce difficulties of people in the state and increase farm produce.
Another sector that will receive special attention is that of industry. Indications are that the BJP led central Government will assist the state Government in promoting private and central Government investment in the sector of industry.
The PDP leadership has plans of promoting trade transactions between Jammu and Kashmir and Pakistan occupied Kashmir. The PDP leadership may seek help from the BJP led Government in the centre in setting up banking facilities on either side of the LOC so that traders on both sides of the border had not to bank on barter system which has proved less lucrative for those engaged in cross-border trade. The BJP leadership has decided to acquire land and seek help from the centre for rehabilitating border villagers at safer places so that they were not forced to migrate to safer places in the event of ceasefire violations by the Pakistani troops and Rangers.
During the last three months of repeated ceasefire violations over 10,000 people have been dislodged as they had to flee their ancestral villages after their houses were hit by mortar shells in which several civilians were injured.
These steps were being taken to prevent the two parties from suffering any erosion in their vote bank. Indications are that the decision of the PDP to forge an alliance with the BJP may not prove palatable to the PDP's vote bank in the Kashmir valley. The alliance may weaken the vote bank of the BJP in Jammu region.
