Against Hippocratic Oath?, Doctors' strike claim two lives in GMCH | | | K Koushal Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 5: Whether bullied or not, but giving a benefit of doubt to doctor that the lady doctor might had been roughed up but a million dollar question here arises is that who gave them the right to become 'doctor death' as their strike have claimed two innocent lives which perhaps have no connection with the ugly episode -roughing up of female medico at Govt Medical College and Hospital Jammu on other day The ongoing strike of junior doctors at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMC&H) Jammu today claimed two lives, who would had been saved if received by doctors well on time. But where is the much acclaimed 'Hippocratic Oath' which historically is taken by physicians and under this oath a new physician (doctor) has to swear on a number of healing Gods to uphold specific ethical standards. The said 'oath' is still held sacred by physicians which says to treat the ill to the best of one's ability, to preserve a patient's privacy, to teach the secrets of medicine to the next generation, and so on but every time doctors call a strike it is only the innocent people who suffer as it is not the authorities but the people/patients who are directly related to the works of medicos. But who cares? Especially when the medicos themselves want to brush aside their much acclaimed 'Hippocratic Oath.' As per hospital sources, one Vijay Kumar, son of Om Prakash a resident of Rajpura who was shifted to GMC&H Jammu after he complained cardiac pain died in absence of due medicare owing ongoing junior doctors strike he breathed his last today. "Vijay Kumar was rushed to the hospital with heart pain, but due strike of doctors, no one attended him at Emergency Ward, and he breathed his last at the hospital bed," lamented one his attendant. He added if doctors giving a second thought would have treated him at 'Golden hour', he perhaps could have survived. Similarly, one Kanta of Rehari breathed her last at GMC&H, Jammu following unavailability of doctors again because of junior doctor's strike. "She was suffering from some health problem and was shifted to the hospital in the morning, but the doctors strike claimed her life also as she was left unattended when she needs the direly needed expert medical help," said her relative. Meanwhile hospital sources said that besides these deaths, several patients and their attendants remain bewildered in the hospital premises running from one ward to another in search of senior doctors who are attending the patients in absence of junior doctors. "As many as 103 patients were registered in Emergency of GMCH yesterday, while as 60 were received today, but due to strike of doctors, many had to shift to other city hospitals for treatment," they said. "The doctors must continue their protest, but not risking the patient care," they said. Pertinently, the doctors and other medical staff at GMC&H observed strike, following scuffle of a female PG doctor with some attendants believed to be the relatives of the former MLC. The doctors have been demanding FIR against the accused attendant, besides additional security in the emergency wards to thwart any such future incident. |
