Kashmir floods, blessing in disguise for R&B | Office destroys vital records daily, Govt in slumber | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Feb 5: The ravaging floods which hit Kashmir in September last year have perhaps turned into a blessing in disguise for several government offices in the Valley as the vital records are being dumped on the pretext of these being destroyed in the deluge. One such glaring example wherein vital government records and files are being destroyed under the garb of floods is the office of the Chief Engineer R&B- located at Raj Bagh here. One could find the government files being thrown in garbage dumping points and some burnt in broad day light without any remorse. The files that are being disguised as useless, according to the sources, contain vital information of the functioning of the office in the past including the tenders, building information and actions taken against the erring officials of the department. As the files are being piled up outside the office of the Chief Engineer R&B, Engineering Complex Raj Bagh one could with ease pep through the documents and would probably be amazed over department's decision in destroying such important government data. Sources told Early Times the files that are being destroyed contain all the relevant data about the functioning of the office prior to floods. "The files could have the information about the actions taken by the higher authorities against some senior officials within the department files could have the status of various building structures and their strength," sources said. This is also worth to note the state government has so far not issued any order or circular wherein it has permitted the offices to destroy government record that was affected by the floods. The records, otherwise, could have been preserved with latest methods and hence preserved for future assistance. But the scandalous destruction of the record is raising several eyebrows as why and how a government document could be burnt and destroyed in such a hasty manner. It was also earlier found that various government departments after the September floods destroyed the records of their respective offices without intimating the same to the state government. Though civil society raised concern over such action by various departments, the government has so far not initiated any action over the issue. "It is a rule known to all that a government record cannot be destroyed, tampered or displaced without the approval of the state government. The scenes that are being seen outside several government offices at present are truly disappointing. It must be stopped to prevent further loss of the government data," said one of the senior government officials. He added further that immediate action must be taken by the government to stop this practice as the same would lead t total chaos in near future. Various other civil society members said the destruction of the data is being deliberately done to save several corrupt officials from being punished. |
