Early Times Report

Rajouri, Feb 25: Tension is brewing up on the Line of Control in Poonch and Rajouri districts after strong and effective retaliation by Indian army during ongoing skirmishes in Uri sector.
In Rajouri district Manjakot, Tarkundi, Ghambhir, Keri, Lam, Jhangar , Pukhrani etc sectors are very vulnerable where Pakistan army has been targeting forward Indian posts/ infrastructure and civil population for the last more than 10 months.
Almost all the forward areas in Nowshera sub division and more than 25 villages in Nowshera sub division are under direct firing or mortar shelling by Pakistan army.
The people of these villages have been facing skirmishes on the LoC followed exodus since 1947-48.
But the successive Union as well as State governments have failed to construct individual bunkers for the safety of the border dwellers till last year.
After large scale migration in the months from May to July last year (more than 4000 were shifted to relief camps and still more than 200 living in the camps) district administration came forward and especially Dr Shahid Iqbal Choudhry, DDC came out with a plan to construct 100 community, individual bunkers by spending money from district resources.
"Out of 100 hundred bunkers more than 80 are ready and being used by the villagers while remaining will be completed soon" said DDC.
Following large scale migration, Raj Nath Singh, Home Minister visited Nowshera & met with the border dwellers who besides special package, special recruitment and compensation on the pattern of Kashmiri migrants had also raised issue of construction of bunkers on priority basis.
Later a high power central team visited the border areas and inspected under construction bunkers and in the month of January Union Government has approved 4918 individual (160 sq feet) and 372 community bunkers (800 sq feet) for Rajouri district.
"The union government has approved 5290 bunkers for Rajouri district in the month of January but the funds have not been released yet" said a district officer.
Dr Shahid Iqbal said that during last 10 months 169 residential buildings and 12 government buildings have suffered partial / major damage in the Pakistani shelling.
Even today Pakistan army resorted to unprovoked firing/mortar shelling on Indian forward posts in Pukhrani, Anwas Bhandar sub sectors at about 5 pm.
"Indian army has retaliated the firing / shelling strongly and effectively and it was stopped at about 7 pm" said army spokesman.
If intelligence sources are to be believed, Nowshera sub division will experience more skirmishes in the near future that may lead to migration following ongoing punish retaliation by Indian army in Uri sector.
