Unemployment on rise | | Vivek Koul | 2/28/2018 10:48:28 PM |
| The roots of education are bitter but its fruits are sweet is a well known Quotation by Aristotle. But now-a-days, it seems that this Greek Philosopher's quotation has been expired or we can say that it has lost its credibility or become obsolete. The reason lies in the fact that a student studies very hard during the academic life and puts all his very best efforts to go through the examination but getting a job after that is next to impossible these days due to cut throat competition and limited job opportunities available. Unemployment is posing a serious threat to the society as well as nation as a whole. Unemployment is a major hurdle in India's growth path. There are hundreds of thousands of students in every state who are wandering here and there for the jobs. Youths who are unemployed including professionals like engineers, doctors, IT professionals and agriculture professionals. Unemployment is posing a serious threat to the society as well as the nation as a whole. Unemployment leads to financial crises and reducing the overall purchasing capacity of the nation. This in turn results in poverty followed by increasing burden of debt. In India the problems of unemployment and poverty have always been major obstacles to economic development. Due to unemployment, unemployed educated youths are committing suicides due to depression. Terrorism and unemployment are somehow correlated with each other with little difference. Terrorism is killing the human beings with the blood while the unemployment is also killing the human beings without blood. Underemployment and unemployment have crippled the Indian economy from time to time. Excessive population is another major problem as far as Indian economy is concerned. Regional disparity is also crucial in this context. Mass migration from rural to urban regions is adding to the problems of unemployment and poverty in India. There are hundreds of thousands of educated youths in every state who are jobless in spite of having good degrees in hand. The reasons for this chronic unemployment are manifold but the flawed planning on part of current Governments has increased this problem further. As per the latest reports of the government data, India's unemployment rate has registered a slight increase since the BJP's government began its term in May 2014, despite the government's professed emphasis on job creation. It is very ironical that the current Modi's government has totally failed to keep their promises alive as far as the job generation is concerned and other opportunities for the entrepreneurship. Make in India, Digital India, Startup India and the Smart Cities project were all aimed at creating jobs for the country's youth, but the government has failed to deliver on that promise which is very sad. The Modi government had announced that 100 smart cities would be created and townships revamped by developing infrastructure and transportation facilities. Additionally, in each of these townships, new job opportunities would be created to accelerate overall development. In particular, the main aim of smart cities was to invest in technology and train the youth to create more jobs. But post the identification of the smart cities, no further steps have been taken by the government. Though there have been multiple conferences on the subject, no proper policy regarding investment in technology and how to provide training has been designed. The government aimed to stress on automation through the introduction of Digital India. As a result, major IT companies such as WIPRO, Tech Mahindra and HCL Technologies hardly hired any new employees from 2015-16. Additionally, demonetization and the switch to online transactions resulted in the closing down of many local provisional stores that accepted only cash payments. In many ways, India is not yet equipped to transition to Digital India. At present, there isn't enough spectrum or wired connectivity to support the initiative. Through the project, the government had aimed to create home based jobs and encourage more entrepreneurs to start online businesses. However, due to poor digital infrastructure, it has failed to achieve its goals. The Modi government initiated many new schemes to boost employment in India. However, these schemes have not so far yielded the expected results. Recession is also one of the main reasons for the overall unemployment rate which seems a worldwide bane bearing within itself a serious threat to social stability and economic development. It is also true that various poverty alleviation and employment generation programs are being implemented by the Govt. of India like MGNREGS, SGSY, Swarna Jayanti Shahari Rozgar Yojana etc but still unemployment remains active all over the India and has become a major concern. With the level of rising unemployment and given India's high youth population, it is important for the government to create gainful opportunities. Unemployment has emerged as a major challenge for the Modi government. Additionally, all its major schemes together have not been able to create jobs. In this context, the government should focus on the key factors of unemployment, as well as develop alternatives that will generate employment for the unemployed youth in India. |
