SRINAGAR, Feb 28: At a time when the state government is claiming that it is taking adequate to preserve Chinars (Arbors) authorities of Super Specialty Hospital here cut down at least five arbors as the same according to them were causing objection.
Reports said that few days back the Super Specialty Hospital authorities cut down five arbors. The authorities said as the arbors were causing problems for them they were left with no option but to cut them. This is despite the Chinar is considered to be a heritage symbol of Kashmir.
The falling of Chinars has not gone well with the people more so those who are associated with the preservation of this tree which has over the years gone extinct in the Kashmir valley. A full-fledged cell in the Department of Floriculture has been entrusted with the preservation of Chinars, still then there is no end to falling of this tree.
The issue about the cutting of Chinars got exposed when the Department of Revenue received information that the roots of one of the trees have been burnt. A team consisting officials of the department visited the site and found that the information was correct. The team virtually pulled up the officers as well as officials of the hospital.
Early Times has learnt from sources that the revenue officials pulled up the Super Specialty authorities for burning the root of an arbor. The officials directed for the filling of the crater created due to the cutting of the arbor especially the one that has come up following burning of root.
When contacted, Naib Tehsildar Chattabal Niabat, Abdul Majeed said that the Super Specialty authorities had moved an application for the cutting of arbors since they were creating hurdles for them. He said that proper sanction was given for the trees to be fallen and there was nothing illegal about the same.
"Couple of arbors had extended to the fact that they were falling on the main building of the hospital. The other arbors were creating obstacles in the smooth movement of the people. The five arbors were dry and small and it was only after proper verification that they were allowed to be cut,' said the Naib Tehsildar.
The Naib Tehsildar said that following necessary directions the authorities planted some saplings of arbors at a distant place so that same turn into full-fledged arbors in the future. He said the security guard had put one of the roots on fire and not filled the place with the soil. He added that the hospital authorities have been ordered to carry out necessary action failing which the department would not hesitate in lodging an FIR.
