| 95 items recovered from terrorists killed in Kupwara encounter, search operation still on | | |  Early Times Report
Srinagar, Mar 23: In a new development, security forces have recovered 95 items, including arms from the Kupwara forests where five terrorists were eliminated in a two-day-long encounter. Five security personnel were also killed in the encounter.
Army sources told that terrorists have erased all the data from the GPS, which they had used to infiltrate into the Indian side of Kashmir. "The terrorists have planned something big and this is the reason they have carried so many items with them. This is the first time we have seen terrorists carrying so many things, including eatable items. They were living in the dense forests for several weeks," he said.
The source said the killed terrorists were highly trained. Sources said that these five Lashkar-e-Toiba terrorists had infiltrated into Lashdath forests on March 15 and were about to be received by two terrorists of LeT, who are also foreigners. As soon as the reception party reached them, the area was cordoned off by troops after specific information was received. The two members of the reception party managed to flee away.
People living in Halmatpora and adjoining villages told that that hundreds of troops of Army, Paramilitary, JK Police and CRPF remain in the area and are combing the forests to nab the other terrorists that they believe to have escaped from the encounter site.
Sources said that security forces have also cordoned off the Batargam forest ranges and are thoroughly searching them for any sign of the escaped terrorists. He said that forces also searched several houses in Batargam village and checked identity cards of people living there.
Meanwhile, Chinar Corps Commander Lt Gen AK Bhatt chaired a key security review meet at Pohrupet, which was attended by top Army and police officers, apart from the field commanders from both the forces. The aim of this review of the security situation was to strengthen the synergy among all agencies engaged in counter-terror operations, which has resulted in elimination of a large number of terrorists with minimum collateral damage in recent times.
North Kashmir, once the hub of foreign terrorists, has been turned around with a relatively stable security environment due to the joint efforts of the security forces. |
